I love my Fuji X-T5, but I’m looking to expand my kit without breaking the bank on native glass. I’m particularly interested in fast primes for street photography. Are the newer Viltrox Pro series or Sigma options comparable to Fujifilm's AF performance? What are the absolute best bang-for-your-buck third-party lenses currently available for the X-mount system?
yo! honestly, i get the struggle cuz fuji glass is pricey, but the third-party scene is actually insane right now. i’ve been using the x-t5 for a year and these lenses are basically glued to my camera.
Here's what I recommend based on my experience:
1. Viltrox AF 27mm f/1.2 Pro XF - this is lowkey the best street lens ive ever used. its sharp even at 1.2 and the AF is super snappy, basically same as native glass.
2. Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X - classic street focal length and way cheaper than the fuji 33mm. It's so light u barely feel it on the X-T5.
3. Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 Pro XF - if u ever do street portraits, this thing is a masterpiece... literally no complaints.
4. Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Fujifilm X - tiny, fast, and crazy sharp.
tbh the AF on the Viltrox Pro series and the newer Sigma glass is basically indistinguishable from fuji's stuff now. u wont regret it. gl! 👍
Yo! Saw this earlier but just responding now. Been shooting Fuji for 10+ years and tbh, the third-party glass is basically 95% of native performance for half the cost. Since the Viltrox stuff was already mentioned, ur best bet for budget street primes is definitely the Sigma lineup.
Here's what I recommend:
- Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary: A total BEAST on the X-T5—it’s usually around $330 and the AF is ridiculously snappy.
- TTArtisan AF 27mm f/2.8: A steal at like $150. It’s not quite as sharp as Fuji’s 27mm, but it's perfect for street work and literally pocketable.
- Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary: Maybe the sharpest lens I’ve ever used for under $400... seriously.
The AF on these newer Sigmas is basically indistinguishable from native glass now. What focal length do u usually prefer for street?? peace!
Seconding the recommendation above for sure. Those Sigma primes are basically legends at this point, and Viltrox is lowkey killing it with their Pro line. But coming back to this an hour later, I realized nobody mentioned the real budget kings that I started with when I was totally broke lol.
I remember when I first got my Fuji setup, I spent all my cash on the body and had like nothing left for a lens. I was highkey stressed! But then I found the TTArtisan AF 27mm f/2.8 Fuji X-Mount and it literally changed everything for me. It's this tiny pancake lens that makes the X-T5 feel like a point-and-shoot. The AF isn't quite as snappy as the native Fuji glass, but for street? It's plenty fast enough, and the price is insane... basically $150 brand new.
Also, if you want something wider with AF, check out the Samyang AF 12mm f/2.0 Fuji X. It's pretty great for those tight city streets where you want to get everything in the frame. Plus, the TTArtisan AF 35mm f/1.8 Fuji X-Mount is another one that punches way above its weight class for the price.
NGL, the biggest lesson I learned is that you dont need the most expensive glass to get bangers. Sometimes the cheaper lenses have more 'soul' anyway... or maybe thats just me being sentimental haha. Are you mostly shooting in daytime or do you need something for night street photography too? Cheers! 👍
For street, I would suggest the TTArtisan AF 27mm f/2.8 for around $150. Just make sure to check firmware compatibility first; third-party AF chips can *sometimes* be risky on the X-T5, right?
Honestly, I totally agree about being careful with the firmware stuff. As a beginner, I was SO nervous about the AF chips on those cheaper lenses not being reliable long-term. I mean, I didn't want to brick my X-T5! Because of that, I actually went a more "DIY" route with manual lenses where you don't have to worry about software updates or AF failure at all. Here is what I've found works for a budget street setup if you're okay with a self-service feel: - Vintage Adapting: I bought a K&F Concept M42 to Fuji X Lens Mount Adapter so I could use old thrift store lenses. It's a bit of a manual process to get them working, but their way cheaper than anything else and very sturdy.
- 7Artisans 35mm f/1.2 II: This is a fully manual lens. I'm still learning how to focus it, but there's no AF motors to break, which feels safer to me for long-term use.
- Meike 35mm f/1.7: Another very simple, manual lens that is great for practicing street shots without spending much. Wait no, I should mention you have to be really careful with the mount when you do the DIY adapter stuff. I was scared I'd scratch the sensor at first! Do you think manual focus is too hard for street work, or is it worth it for the reliability?
Commenting to find later
Came here to say the same thing lol. Great minds think alike I guess.
ngl, i have the exact same struggle lol. even after shooting fuji for over a decade, i still cant justify some of those native prices for everyday street stuff. ive spent way too much time hunting for deals and testing alternatives because i just refuse to drop a grand on every single prime lens. since the others mentioned the usual suspects like viltrox, i gotta give a shoutout to some less common ones that have stayed in my bag. the Tokina atx-m 23mm F1.4 X is a real sleeper—super fast AF and it has that classic character that reminds me of the older fuji glass. its usually around $300ish now and feels great in the hand. also, if you want something crazy fast for night street photography, check out the Sirui Sniper 23mm f/1.2 AF. i picked one up recently and its legit for low light. the bokeh is smooth and for an f/1.2 lens, the price is kinda insane. another one people sleep on is the Samyang AF 75mm f/1.8 X. i know it might be a bit long for some street styles, but its tiny and the optics are punching way above their weight class for about $350.
