I'm heading to Italy in about two weeks and I'm really struggling to pick just one lens for my X-T4. I hate carrying a big camera bag and just want one thing I can leave on the body all day. I'm currently torn between the classic 18-55mm f/2.8-4 and the 16-80mm f4. The 18-55 is smaller and cheaper which is great because my budget is kinda tight—around $500 max for a used copy. But then I see everyone saying the 16-80 is better for travel because of the extra reach, even if it is a bit chunkier.
Should I prioritize the small size or that extra 80mm zoom range for the trip?
Thinking about this for a sec... if you really want to avoid bulk, be careful with those heavier zooms. I would suggest:
I've been shooting the X-series since the original X-Pro1 came out, and if there is one thing I've learned from dozens of international trips, its that weight is the ultimate fun-killer. Italy is a lot of walking, stairs, and tight spaces... you'll feel every extra ounce by day three. Re: "Honestly, I was pretty let down by the..."
Honestly, I was pretty let down by the Fujifilm XF 16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR. I had some annoying issues with edge softness and honestly its just too heavy for a single-lens setup imo. Since youre on a budget, stick to the Fujifilm XF 18-55mm f/2.8-4 R LM OIS. Its way smaller and you can find used copies for like $300 easily. Dont waste the cash on the bigger zoom... it isnt as good as people claim.
