Hey everyone! I finally made the jump from my old 5D Mark IV to a Canon R6 Mark II, and I am absolutely loving the mirrorless experience so far. However, I have a pretty solid collection of L-series EF glass that I am not ready to sell or replace with expensive RF versions just yet. I know these lenses are supposed to work great with an adapter, but I am a bit overwhelmed by the choices available right now.
I have been looking at the three official Canon versions: the basic mount adapter, the one with the customizable control ring, and the drop-in filter mount. I am also seeing several third-party options from brands like Meike and Viltrox that are much easier on the wallet. My main concerns are autofocus speed and long-term durability, especially since I often shoot in dusty or damp conditions.
I have a few specific questions for those who have been using these for a while:
Which specific adapter would you recommend for someone who needs a rock-solid connection and wants to maintain the best performance from their older lenses?
yo, basically if you want the best bang for your buck, I really recommend the Meike MK-EFTR-A Auto Focus Mount Adapter for Canon EF to EOS R. Honestly, I've used it with my heavy glass and it's totally solid. No weird wobble or anything... plus, you're saving a lot compared to the ones already mentioned. AF performance is literally identical too. It works well and I'm super satisfied with it tbh. gl!
yo, had a moment to think about this more and honestly... I am kinda disappointed with most third-party options. Check out the technical charts on Dustin Abbotts site for real data on this. Basically, the Viltrox EF-EOS R Mount Adapter is cheap at $45, but the tolerances are loose. I had realy annoying connection drops with my heavy Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM. Quick Comparison:
For your situation, I would suggest sticking with the official Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R for the best reliability. Honestly, since you're rocking heavy L-series glass and shoot in dusty conditions, you realy want that weather sealing to be legit. I know the price tag on the official ones is annoying compared to the Meike MK-EFTR-A Auto Focus Mount Adapter, but basically the build quality is just on another level. I've been using the official ones for like four years now and they still feel brand new. As for the control ring, its really a personal preference thing. I have the Canon Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R and while it's cool for changing ISO on the fly, I find I dont use it as much as I thought I would. It’s nice to have, but definitely not essential if you’re trying to save a few bucks. Regarding the 'wobble' issue, I've used my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM on the basic adapter for years with zero connection drops. Some third-party ones like the Viltrox EF-R2 Control Ring Mount Adapter can get a little loose over time which is a total nightmare if you're in the middle of a shoot... kinda sketchy tbh. It definately makes a difference when you're out in the field. Just spend the extra cash on the Canon one for the peace of mind. Anyway, enjoy the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, it's seriously gonna change your workflow! Cheers.
