im honestly so fed up with my built-in flash making everyone look like ghosts with red eyes its driving me crazy. i tried this cheap no-name one from amazon last month but it already stopped syncing with my rebel t7i and now im stuck with a shoot for my sisters engagement party next weekend and nothing to show for it.

i need something that actually works without costing more than the camera itself. ive got maybe 100 bucks left in my gear budget after buying lenses and i really want something reliable for indoor shots. what is actually the best budget external flash for canon dslr photography that wont die on me after two weeks?

To add to the point above: I have definitely been in your shoes before. I once used a total bargain-bin flash for a friends graduation and the thing literally started smoking after ten shots. Talk about a buzzkill. If you are really trying to stick under that hundred dollar mark, you might want to consider whether you actually need TTL or if you can live with manual.

  • Godox TT600 Thinklite Manual Flash is honestly a beast for the price. It is super reliable but you have to set the power yourself which takes a bit of practice.
  • Neewer NW-670 TTL Flash for Canon is another option that is very wallet-friendly and does the automatic stuff, but I would suggest being careful with it since the build quality can be a little plasticky. Just dont forget that a flash is only as good as the juice inside. Make sure to grab some Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA Rechargeable Batteries too. Using regular disposables is basically asking for the flash to take five years to recycle between shots which is the last thing you want at an engagement party.

Unfortunately, budget clones are usually trash. I had issues with them failing constantly. Try these alternatives:

Be careful with no-names, I once had one die mid-shoot... kinda embarrassing. Make sure to get a Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon instead, it wont let you down.

Regarding what #3 said about things smoking... honestly be careful with those cheap units. I once had the battery compartment on my old setup literally melt shut because the contacts overheated. It ruined my batteries and couldve been way worse. Make sure to keep an eye on the heat if youre firing off shots quickly. I would suggest checking the build quality of the door before you trust it for a whole event tho.
