Hey everyone! I have recently made the jump over to the L-mount alliance after shooting on micro four thirds for years. I picked up a Panasonic S5IIX and a couple of those beautiful Sigma I-series primes, and while the image quality is absolutely blowing me away, I am hitting a bit of a wall with the ergonomics.
The built-in flip-out screen is decent for photography, but when I am shooting high-bitrate video or trying to nail manual focus at f/1.4 on a bright day, it is just not cutting it. I find myself squinting at the screen and guessing if my focus is actually sharp. Plus, when I have the camera rigged up on a gimbal, the small screen often gets blocked by the motors or cables, making it nearly impossible to see my framing properly.
I am looking for recommendations on the top-rated external monitors that specifically play well with L-mount setups. I have been eyeing the Atomos Ninja V because of the ProRes RAW recording capabilities, which would be a huge plus for the S5IIX, but I am also curious if a monitor-only option like something from SmallHD or PortKeys might be a better fit if I want to keep the rig lightweight.
Here are a few specific things I am looking for:
I am also interested to know if anyone is using the camera control features on some of the newer monitors. Is it worth the extra setup time to be able to trigger recording or change ISO directly from the monitor screen, or is that more trouble than it is worth for a solo operator?
What are you all using on your L-mount rigs right now? Are there any specific models that you feel offer the best balance of features and price for professional video work?
actually i saved a ton using the Feelworld LUT5 5.5 Inch 3000nit Ultra Bright Camera Field Monitor. its technically 3000 nits which is literal overkill for daylight L-mount shoots, definitely helps nailing focus! lol
In my experience, here is what I recommend for that Panasonic LUMIX S5IIX Mirrorless Camera:
Just found this thread and +1 to what was said earlier about the PortKeys for control! But honestly, as someone who has been rigging cameras for over a decade, my biggest concern is always signal RELIABILITY. If ur shooting 6K on that S5IIX and the HDMI wiggles just a millimeter, your preview is toast and it is soooo frustrating. I have been incredibly satisfied with the SmallHD Indie 7 Smart Monitor. It is 1000 nits which is basically perfect for outdoor visibility without needing a massive hood, and the color accuracy is industry standard. It handles LUTs way better than the budget options in my experience. To keep things safe and stable, I recommend:
To add to the point above: QuillQuasar is spot on about signal stability. I have been using the S5IIX for a while now and found that a solid monitor is only half the battle... you really need something that can handle the heat and the data rates without glitching. I have been very satisfied with these setups for my L-mount rig:
Since you have the S5IIX, this is a fantastic alternative to the Ninja. It allows you to record Blackmagic RAW, which some editors prefer over ProRes RAW for the metadata control in Resolve. It is built like a tank, has dual battery slots for hot-swapping, and the 2500 nits brightness is actually usable in direct sun without a hood.
If you want something smaller but professional grade, this is it. It has a full aluminum alloy shell which helps with heat dissipation during long shoots. The 2200 nits brightness is very clean. The camera control via the S5IIX works well for changing white balance or ISO without touching the body, which is a lifesaver on a gimbal when things are hard to reach.
If you realize the extra weight of a recorder is too much, this is a great monitor-only option. It is basically a Ninja V without the recording guts. It stays cool, uses the same high-quality color tools, and wont kill your NPF batteries nearly as fast as the recording versions do. No matter which you pick, definitely invest in a high-quality Kondor Blue Coiled HDMI Cable to ensure that 6K signal doesnt drop out while you are recording.
You might want to consider the Shimbol Memory I 5.5 Inch HDMI Recording Monitor if you want that recording feature without the battery-melting heat of an Atomos. It records H.264 proxies to an SD card which is super handy for the S5IIX workflow. Just be careful with the signal chain tho; these mid-range recorders can sometimes struggle with 6K/30p handshakes if the cable isnt high-quality. I would also suggest looking at the Viltrox DC-550 Pro 1200 Nits Touch Screen Monitor. It hits a sweet spot with 1200 nits of brightness. Honestly, those 3000 nit screens sound great on paper but they eat NPF batteries like crazy and get pretty hot. The Viltrox handles heat dissipation way better in my experience. Make sure to use a high-speed Kondor Blue Braided HDMI to HDMI 2.0 Cable to handle the 4:2:2 10-bit data rates without those annoying signal drops. The camera control via monitor is a fun gimmick but honestly, for a solo operator, it usually just adds another point of failure. Id stick to the physical buttons for critical stuff like ISO.
