Hey everyone! I’ve finally booked a dream two-week trip to Japan for this spring, and I couldn't be more excited. However, I’m currently having a bit of a gear crisis. I’ve been a loyal Micro Four Thirds user for years (shooting with an OM-D E-M5 Mark III), and while I love my collection of tiny primes, I’m really dreading the idea of constantly swapping lenses while navigating crowded subways or hiking up to shrines in the rain.
I’m on the hunt for the ultimate "one-lens" solution—something versatile enough to stay on my camera for 90% of the trip. I mostly shoot a mix of street photography, sweeping landscapes, and the occasional architectural detail. I love the M4/3 system specifically because it doesn't weigh me down, so I don't want to accidentally turn my setup into a heavy DSLR-sized beast.
I’ve been doing some research and I’m torn between a few specific options. The Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS PRO seems to be the gold standard for travel because of that insane focal range and Sync IS, but I’m slightly worried about the weight and size for a whole day of walking. On the other hand, the Panasonic-Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 is much more compact and offers that faster aperture at the wide end, which could be a lifesaver for indoor shots at temples. Then there are the super-zooms like the Lumix 14-140mm II, which are incredibly light and affordable, but I wonder if I’d be sacrificing too much image quality and weather sealing for my needs.
My budget is around $800 to $1,000, and I'm totally open to buying used to get higher-quality glass. Does anyone here have hands-on experience with these for long-term travel? Is the extra reach of a super-zoom worth the trade-off in sharpness, or should I stick with a high-end "pro" zoom?
For those of you who travel light with M4/3, what is your go-to versatile zoom lens that you absolutely swear by?
In my experience, here's how they compare for your E-M5 III:
- Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4.0 IS PRO: Technically amazing range, but it's 561g. Way too front-heavy for your small body tbh.
- Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 ASPH. POWER O.I.S.: Best balance. It's 320g and the f/2.8 is clutch for dark shrines.
- Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S.: Lightest, but you'll lose some sharpness and weather sealing.
Go for the 12-60mm, it's the perfect choice!
Quick question - you hitting many dark izakayas?? I loved the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm f/4.0 PRO in Kyoto, but is that f/4 aperture a dealbreaker for your low-light needs?? Cheers.
Wow ok that changes things. Gonna have to rethink my approach now.
