Hey everyone! I recently grabbed a used Lumix GX85 and I’m looking to dive into street photography. The kit lens is okay, but I really want something more compact and faster for those low-light evening shots without breaking the bank. My budget is pretty tight, ideally under $250. I’ve been eyeing the Panasonic 25mm f1.7 since it’s so affordable, but I’m worried it might be a bit narrow for crowded city streets. I’ve also seen the Olympus 17mm f2.8 pancake lens, which looks great for portability, but I'm unsure about the autofocus speed. Between these two, or maybe a used Sigma prime, which budget lens offers the best balance of sharpness and stealth for a beginner?
Sooo, i totally get where youre coming from with the GX85! Its such a sweet little camera, but choosing that first prime lens is honestly a struggle. Basically, on Micro Four Thirds, you gotta remember the 2x crop factor. Why it matters? Well, that 25mm u like actually shoots like a 50mm. Its a classic length, but in tight alleys or crowded markets, you’ll constantly find urself backing into traffic just to fit the scene in. Its lowkey frustrating when ur gear limits ur shots. In my experience, here is what I recommend for that tight budget: * Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. - Honestly, this is the gold standard for street. Its a 40mm equivalent which is the perfect "do everything" width. I had the original version and it was okay, but the Mark II is better built. The autofocus isnt the fastest in the world, but it’s literally sharp as a tack and fits in a jacket pocket easily.
* Panasonic Lumix G 14mm f/2.5 II ASPH. - If u wanna be REALLY stealthy, this is it. Its tiny. f/2.5 isnt amazing for low light compared to the 1.7, but it's much better than the kit lens for evening vibes.
* Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 - I know u mentioned the f/2.8 pancake, but unfortunately, that lens was a total disappointment for me. The autofocus was noisy and hunt-y... not what u want for stealth. If u can find the f/1.8 version used for under $250, GRAB IT. Its way better. But yeah, avoid that older 17mm f/2.8... it just isnt as good as expected for modern street stuff. gl! peace 👍
In my experience, focal length basically dictates your whole vibe! A 25mm is like 50mm on full frame, which i think is honestly too narrow for busy sidewalks. Why? cuz the field of view is too tight to fit the whole 'story' in! I suggest hunting for a used Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary. its technically AMAZING for low light and super sharp... definitely the best budget glass for night street!! gl
