Hey everyone! I have been shooting with my Nikon D780 for about a year now, mostly doing outdoor portraits. I am starting to get more indoor event bookings and realized the built-in flash just isn't cutting it anymore. I really need something that handles TTL reliably and has a decent recycle time so I don't miss shots.
I have looked at a few options but I am torn:
Since I am still fairly new to off-camera lighting, I wanted to ask the experts here. What are your top recommended external flashes for Nikon DSLRs right now?
Agreeing with the Godox recommendation, though if you want to save cash without losing features, the Godox TT685II-N TTL Flash for Nikon is a beast. It shares the same 2.4G wireless system and GN 60 specs as the V860III. Just pair it with Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA High Capacity Ni-MH cells. You lose the li-ion convenience, but the performance per dollar is basically unbeatable for event work tbh.
Honestly, if you are doing paid events, I always suggest sticking with native Nikon gear for the best reliability. The Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight is my top pick because it has an internal cooling system. This is huge for event work because it prevents the flash from overheating and shutting down right during the cake cutting or a keynote speech. The Nikon SB-700 Speedlight is also a solid, more affordable native choice. It is super easy to use and the TTL exposure is just more consistent than what I have seen from budget brands like Yongnuo. Sure, you pay a premium for the name, but you're really paying for the peace of mind that it wont misfire when things get busy... which happens more than you'd think with cheaper units.
Tbh, grab the Godox V860III-N TTL Li-ion Flash. With a GN of 60m and 1.5s recycle time, its technically superior to the Nikon SB-700 Speedlight for high-volume event work.
I have been using a basic setup for my D780 and honestly its been super reliable for me so far. I am pretty satisfied with how it handles indoor lighting because those venues can be a total nightmare sometimes with the weird yellow lights. Speaking of venues, I did this wedding last month at an old barn and the power actually went out right before the first dance. It was wild because we had to use some battery powered lanterns people had in their cars to light up the floor. One of the guests even started playing acoustic guitar since the DJ lost his setup. The vibe was actually way better than the original plan though, everyone was dancing in the dark basically and I got some cool shots of people just being goofy. The catering was also surprisingly good, they had these mini sliders that I am still thinking about lol. Anyway sorry I kinda went off topic there.
