Hey everyone! I finally took the plunge and upgraded to the Nikon D850 recently. It is been an absolute dream to work with so far, but I have hit a bit of a snag. Coming from a D750, I was very used to having that little pop-up flash for emergencies or simple fill-light. Now that I am working with a professional body that doesn't have one, I realize I really need to invest in a high-quality external speedlight as soon as possible.
I do a mix of indoor event photography and some environmental portraiture, so I am looking for something that can keep up with the D850 high resolution and speed. I have been looking at the Nikon SB-5000 because of the radio control and the built-in cooling system, which sounds great for long shoots, but that price tag is definitely a bit steep for my current budget. On the other hand, I see so many people in my local groups raving about the Godox V1 or the V860III because of the lithium-ion batteries and the much lower price point.
My main concern is reliability and TTL consistency. I have had some third-party flashes misfire in the past during crucial moments, and I really do not want to deal with that while using such a high-end body. I also really value fast recycle times since I often shoot in quick bursts during wedding receptions or fast-paced events. I have also heard some mixed things about how older Nikon flashes interface with the D850 newer menu system, so I am feeling a bit stuck on which way to go.
Has anyone here found a perfect match for their D850? I am willing to spend anywhere from $300 to $600 if it means I get a flash that is going to be a workhorse for years to come.
Specifically, I would love to know:
I would love to hear about your personal setups and what has worked best for you in real-world shooting conditions!
In my experience, I've had issues with third-party units misfiring during weddings, which is the worst. I tried the Godox V1-N Flash for Nikon but the TTL was not as good as expected compared to the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight. Unfortunately, the Nikon is way more reliable for a D850 workhorse. It's expensive but honestly worth it if your shooting pro gigs... peace
Yo! Late to the party but I totally feel u on the missing pop-up flash. I was so used to it on my old gear too. Since youre worried about budget but want pro reliability, I think you should look at the Nikon SB-700 AF Speedlight vs the Godox V860III-N Flash for Nikon.
Sooo I went through this exact same thing last year after getting my D850. I'm still kinda new to pro-level lighting, but I spent weeks obsessing over the technical specs because I wanted to get it right. I actually started with the Godox V1-N Flash for Nikon because the 76Ws output and the round head seemed like a steal for the price. Ngl, that 7.2V/2600mAh Li-ion battery is basically a lifesaver for long events since you dont have to carry a ton of AAs... but i did notice the TTL accuracy was kinda hit or miss in tricky lighting. I eventually tried the Nikon SB-5000 AF Speedlight and that cooling system is actually legit - i think it is rated for like 100 consecutive full-power bursts? It feels way more sturdy. Plus, the interface on the D850 menu felt way more native once I added the Nikon WR-R11a Wireless Remote Controller. I learned that for me, the consistent recycle times and reliability were highkey more important than the cost savings. Quick tip: Always keep your firmware updated. Updating the Godox XProII-N TTL Wireless Flash Trigger solved most of my communication glitches!
