I have been shooting with my Nikon D850 for about a year now, mostly focusing on landscapes and street photography. I am finally looking to dive deeper into professional-level portraiture, and I want to make sure I am getting the most out of that incredible 45.7-megapixel sensor. While my current zoom lenses are decent, I am really craving that specific pop and creamy bokeh that only a high-quality prime can deliver.

I have been doing some research and I am currently torn between a few different focal lengths. I am looking at the classic 85mm f/1.4G because of its legendary reputation, but I have also seen some stunning results from the 105mm f/1.4E. My main concern is finding a lens that is sharp enough to handle the high resolution of the D850 while still providing a smooth transition into the background blur. I plan on doing a mix of outdoor lifestyle sessions and some tighter headshots in a studio setting, so versatility is a plus.

I have considered Sigma Art lenses as well, but I am wondering if the native Nikon glass plays better with the autofocus system on this specific body. For those of you who use the D850 for portraits, which prime lens provides the best balance of sharpness and character for your shoots?

For your situation, I totally get where youre coming from! I actually got my Nikon D850 Digital SLR Camera last year too and choosing a portrait lens was lowkey the hardest decision I made... that sensor is literally insane with those 45.7 megapixels so u really dont wanna waste it on bad glass. I am still kinda figuring it all out myself but I can share what I have seen so far! Here is what I found when I was testing some stuff out:

  • Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G: This one is like the gold standard for a reason. Its super light compared to others and the skin tones are just sooo good. But honestly, I noticed it might struggle a tiny bit with some purple fringing when its wide open on the D850. Still, for outdoor lifestyle, its way easier to carry around all day (at least thats what worked for me).
  • Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED: Seriously, this lens is basically magic. If u want that 3D pop ur talking about, this is it. Its definitely sharper than the 85mm and it handles the high resolution way better i think. The only downside is it is HUGE and kinda heavy... my wrist was definitely feeling it after a two hour session lol.
  • Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art for Nikon F: I know u asked about native glass, but this one is actually reallyyy sharp. I was worried about the autofocus too but it seemed okay for the most part? But yeah, the Nikon lenses just feel a bit more reliable on the body i guess. Honestly, I would suggest the 105mm if u can handle the size. It just feels like it was MADE for that high-res sensor and the background blur is just... wow. But if ur doing a lot of walking for lifestyle, be careful because it gets heavy fast! Maybe try to rent one first to be sure? Anyway hope that helps... peace

Honestly, the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED is sharper for 45MP than the Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G and has better bokeh. The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art is also incredibly sharp but way heavier.
