Hey everyone! I’ve been a proud Nikon Z7 user for a little over a year now, and I absolutely love the image quality I get from that 45.7MP sensor. However, I’ve hit a bit of a wall when it comes to my gear setup for upcoming travels. I have a big, sturdy aluminum tripod that I use for local shoots, but it’s a total beast to carry around. I’m planning a two-week trip through the Swiss Alps and some coastal cities in Italy later this year, and there is no way I can lug that heavy thing through airports and up hiking trails.

The challenge I’m facing is finding a travel tripod that is lightweight enough to not break my back, but still sturdy enough to handle the Z7. Since the resolution is so high, even the tiniest bit of camera shake or wind vibration really shows up in my landscape shots. I usually pair my Z7 with the 24-70mm f/4 S or the 14-30mm f/4 S, but I occasionally use the heavier 70-200mm f/2.8 with the FTZ adapter, so I need something that won't wobble under that weight.

I’ve been eyeing the Peak Design Carbon Fiber tripod because it looks so compact, but I’ve heard mixed things about the center column stability. I’ve also looked at some of the Gitzo Traveler models, though the price tag is a bit eye-watering. Ideally, I’d like something that folds down to under 16 inches so it fits inside my camera backpack rather than hanging off the side, and my budget is flexible—around $400 to $700—if it means I won't have to buy another one for five years.

Does anyone else here shoot with a Z7 and have a travel tripod they swear by? I'd love to hear about your real-world experiences with stability versus portability. What specific model are you using, and how does it hold up in windy conditions or when using slightly longer lenses?

Sooo I once hauled a massive rig through the Alps and literally regretted every step... it's the worst. I've tried many over the years and i think you dont gotta drop $700. Maybe try the Benro Rhino 08C Carbon Fiber Tripod with VX20 Ball Head.

  • Folds to 13.8 inches
  • Super light carbon
  • Costs around $230 Basically, save ur cash for Italy! It holds my Z7 rock solid.
