What is the best single lens for weddings on a Canon R6? I've seen the 24-70mm f2.8 listed as the top pick but then some guys say the 85mm is essential for portraits.

I'm shooting a ceremony in a dark venue next month with a $1600 budget so I'm worried the zoom wont be fast enough...

Checking in a day late but you're gonna love that R6! For a dark venue, you definitely want speed.

  • Absolutely agree! Snagging a used Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM with an adapter is a fantastic way to save money while keeping your setup super safe and reliable!

The R6 sensor is a low light monster so dont stress too much about the noise! If you're sticking to a single lens for the whole day, that EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II is the gold standard and you can find them used for about $1100. It stays super sharp across the whole frame even wide open at 2.8. But if you really want to maximize that $1600 budget and handle the dark, look at the RF prime combo instead. The RF 35mm f/1.8 and RF 85mm f/2 together only cost about $900 total. That gives you f/1.8 for the ceremony which is over a full stop faster than the zoom! Plus the 85mm has 0.5x magnification which is amazing for detail shots of the rings. The R6 IBIS provides up to 8 stops of coordinated control with these specific lenses... literally lets you shoot handheld at 1/5 or 1/10 second if your hands are steady. It's totally wild how much you can push this setup. You're gonna have a blast with this kit and the results will look fantastic!!
