Honestly I am about to just give up and use my old iPhone for my trip to Montana next month because trying to find a camera is actually a nightmare. I have been looking at websites for like three days straight and I dont understand half of what they are talking about with sensors and megapixels and mirrorless vs whatever else. Everything I find that looks decent ends up being like 1200 dollars which I definitely do not have. My budget is strictly 500 bucks or less because I still need to pay for my flights and hiking gear for Glacier National Park so I cant go over that.

I just want something that takes clear photos of the mountains and the bears from a distance obviously lol but every time I think I found one people in the reviews start complaining about lens mounts or autofocus points and I just get so lost. It feels like you need a degree just to take a nice picture these days. I really dont want to waste my money on something junk but I have no idea where to start or if 500 is even enough for a real camera that isnt just a toy. Which mirrorless camera actually offers the best value under $500 or am I basically looking for something that doesnt exist?

I made the mistake of bringing a basic kit to Yellowstone years ago and the bears just looked like blurry ants. Be careful about buying brand new because 500 dollars doesnt go far these days. I would suggest hunting for a used Sony Alpha a6000 Mirrorless with 16-50mm Lens on a resale site. It is older but it is a beast for the price. Just watch out for the battery life tho, it drains fast in the cold.

Unfortunately, 500 is such a tight budget these days since prices went through the roof. I had issues with cheap entry models not being as good as expected for distance shots, which was super disappointing. Honestly, your best bet is probably a Panasonic Lumix G7 16MP Mirrorless with 14-42mm Lens. Its one of the few solid and reliable options left at that price point. If you need more help, just ask!
