I'm in a huge rush because my sister's wedding is in three weeks and I volunteered to take some candid shots but I literally don't have a camera yet lol. I've been looking at the Sony a6000 since everyone says it's the gold standard for budget stuff but it's like a decade old now right?? Is that even worth it in 2024? Then I saw the Canon M50 but people are saying that mount is dead so I'm totally lost.

  • Must be under $500 with a lens included
  • Needs to handle low light okay-ish for the reception
  • Small enough to carry around Seattle
  • Fast autofocus is a huge plus

Should I just go used or is there something new that actually fits this?

Dude, you gotta check out the Micro Four Thirds system if you want to stay under $500 and still get killer shots! Honestly, people sleep on these cameras but they are so fun to use and super budget-friendly. I picked up a used Panasonic Lumix GX85 with 12-32mm Lens recently and it is freaking amazing for quick candid stuff.

  • The built-in stabilization is a total lifesaver for those dark reception halls.
  • It is legit tiny! You can carry it around Seattle all day and your neck wont even hurt.
  • The autofocus is snappy enough to catch people dancing. Another fantastic pick is the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III with 14-42mm EZ Lens. It looks like a cool vintage camera but performs like a beast. Seriously, buy used from a site like MPB or KEH to get the most bang for your buck! Grab an extra battery tho cuz these small cameras eat through them fast... Good luck with the wedding!

In my experience, the used market is basically your only hope for a sub-$500 kit that wont fail you at a reception. Over the years, I have shot plenty of events with older tech and honestly, the Sony a6000 with 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS Lens is still a workhorse, but you are right to be skeptical about its age. Its fine for daylight, but for a wedding reception in a dark hall? Youll struggle with the older autofocus tracking. I remember shooting a wedding for a friend years ago with an early mirrorless kit and I missed half the shots because the camera just hunted in the low light. If you can stretch the budget or find a deal on a used Sony a6100 with 16-50mm Power Zoom Lens, that is the one you want. It looks identical to the a6000 but the autofocus system is worlds apart. It has real-time eye tracking which is a literal lifesaver for candids. You dont want to be fiddling with focus points while people are dancing. The Canon M50 is okay, but I wouldnt invest in a dead mount now. Tbh, for Seattle rain and street shots later, the Sony ecosystem is way better. Just keep in mind that the kit lens is pretty slow, so if the reception is really dark, you might eventually need a faster prime lens like the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Sony E to really nail those low-light shots without them being super grainy... just something to think about for the future.
