What is the best mirrorless camera I can buy for under $500 right now? Im so lost and honestly I dont even know what mirrorless really means compared to the older ones but I need a real camera for my sisters wedding next month in Vegas and Im starting to panic. Everyone says phone photos arent gonna be good enough for the album and I only have a few weeks to learn how to use the thing. I looked on Amazon but all the numbers like a6000 or z50 just make my head spin and I dont want to buy the wrong thing. Is $500 even enough for something decent or am I totally dreaming? I just need something that takes sharp pictures without me needing a degree in photography...

honestly you arent dreaming but 500 bucks is definitely the floor for mirrorless gear. i remember when i had to shoot my cousins engagement party on a tiny budget and i was totally panicking about the low light. i ended up grabbing a used sony and the difference was night and day compared to my phone. for a vegas wedding you really want that bigger sensor for the indoor shots because phone photos just get grainy and weird when the lights go down. here are a few that usually hover around your budget especially if you look at the used market:

  • Sony Alpha a6000 with 16-50mm Lens this one is a classic for a reason and the autofocus is still fast enough to catch people dancing
  • Panasonic Lumix G7 with 14-42mm Lens it feels more like a dslr and the menus are way easier to understand for a beginner
  • Canon EOS M50 Mark II with 15-45mm Lens canons colors are usually the best for wedding skin tones and it fits nicely in smaller hands just stick to the auto modes for now since you only have a few weeks. i spent way too much time trying to learn manual settings before my first big event and just ended up missing shots... just let the camera do the heavy lifting. check places like mpb or even local shops to find these under 500... you definitely dont need a degree to get sharp photos with these.
