As a beginner wedding photographer, I need advice on the best affordable Canon lenses that can handle low-light church ceremonies and reception venues. I'm considering the 24-70mm f/2.8 vs 50mm f/1.4 combination. What's the minimum gear setup that won't break the bank but still delivers professional results for clients?
For budget-conscious wedding photographers, I'd definitely recommend the RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens as your first RF lens. While the f/2.8 trinity lenses get all the attention, this f/4 is a fantastic workhorse that was not always wide enough compared to the professional options, but it's still very capable. It has a max aperture of f/4, but an additional focal length to 105mm, giving you that extra reach for ceremony shots and portraits. The 24-105mm range covers most wedding scenarios, and you can always crop in post if needed. The image stabilization helps tremendously in low light situations.
Don't sleep on the new Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM - a wedding photographer's dream lens — one to shoot both portraits and close-ups of the rings. Both the price and size put this lens in the realm of reality for most photographers. You'll be hard pressed to find a better lens for the money. It's not an L lens, but it's not an "L" lens, but the difference is smaller than you might expect. The L lens is sharper; but only slightly. For the budget-minded, this could be an excellent portrait lens to pair with a 24-70mm.
