I just got my hands on a brand new Fujifilm X-T5 and I am so hyped to take it on my trip to Tokyo next month! Ive been saving up for this for like a year. But man, the official NP-W235 batteries are like 80 bucks each and I feel like Im gonna need at least three or four for long days of shooting street photography. I started looking into third-party options like Wasabi Power and SmallRig because they are way cheaper, but now Im getting nervous. I read some forum posts saying that the newer Fuji cameras have sensors that can detect non-official batteries and might give you an error message, but then other people say theyve used them for years without any issues at all. My main worry is the swelling thing... I saw a horror story about a battery getting stuck inside the chamber because it expanded and they had to send the whole camera in for repair. I really dont want to fry my sensor or brick my new baby right before my big vacation but I also dont want to drop 300 dollars just on extra batteries when that could go towards a nice prime lens instead. Do you guys actually trust the off-brand stuff for the X-series or is it better to just bite the bullet and pay the Fuji tax?

Listen, congrats on the X-T5, it is an absolute beast for street photography and Tokyo is basically the perfect playground for it. About the batteries... ngl it is a bit of a touchy subject in the Fuji world lately. Ive been shooting with Fuji since the original X-Pro1 days and things have definitely changed with the newer tech. The Fujifilm NP-W235 Li-Ion Battery is a lot more complex than the older cells, and the camera is way more pickier about voltage levels. I would suggest being really careful about going full budget on a brand new $1700 body. Those horror stories about swelling arent just myths to scare you. It usually happens because some cheap third-party cells dont handle heat well during fast charging or long bursts. If a battery swells inside that tight X-T5 chamber, you are looking at a nightmare repair bill that costs way more than the money you saved. Plus, Fuji firmware can sometimes throttle performance if it doesnt detect an official chip, so you might lose some of that high-speed magic. If you really want to save some cash for that prime lens, maybe grab one more official Fuji one for your main shooting and then something like the SmallRig NP-W235 Camera Battery and Charger Kit or a Wasabi Power Battery for Fujifilm NP-W235 as an emergency-only backup. Just dont leave the off-brand ones inside the camera overnight or while its charging via USB-C. Better safe than sorry when you are halfway across the world, ya know?
