What are the best budget-friendly prime lenses for Canon RF mount?

I just picked up an EOS R8, but those L-series lenses are way out of my budget! I'm looking for sharp 35mm or 50mm primes for street photography and portraits. Are the cheaper non-L versions worth it, or should I look at third-party options? Which budget RF prime offers the best value for the money?

Basically, the RF market is kinda weird right now because Canon keeps their AF protocols locked down. This matters because it limits ur third-party options mostly to manual focus lenses, which can be a bit of a gamble. For your R8, I'd suggest being a bit cautious and looking at the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM. It's a step up from the super-budget primes, but the image quality is way closer to L-series than the price suggests.

In my experience, it's actually the best value-for-money lens in the entire lineup. If you're okay with manual focus for street work, the TTArtisan 35mm f/1.4 for Canon RF is dirt cheap and actually pretty decent for the price. It's risky because you lose that lightning-fast AF, but it’s a fun way to learn. Honestly, sticking to native glass like the Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM for portraits is much safer for long-term reliability. gl!

For your situation, I recommend sticking to first-party glass to avoid AF protocol issues. These non-L primes are technically solid, even if they feel a bit plasticky.

* Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM - roughly $180; basically essential for portraits.
* Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM - about $300; SUPER tiny for street stuff.

Third-party stuff is risky because Canon's proprietary mount is tricky, so I'd be CAREFUL. Stick to OEM for reliability.

Any updates on this?

ok so i totally feel u on this!! those L lenses are like... priced for people who dont have rent to pay lol. i've been using the EOS R8 for a minute now and honestly, the non-L primes are lowkey better for street photography cuz they're so small and light. they make the camera way less intimidating, right?

Here's what I recommend: Get the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM first. it's like under 200 bucks usually and it's stupidly sharp for the price. i use it for portraits all the time and honestly? clients cant tell the difference between this and the expensive glass once you edit the shots.

If u want something wider for street, the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM is actually the way to go. it's a bit pricier (around $400-500) but it has built-in Image Stabilization - which is HUGE cuz the R8 doesnt have IBIS (internal stabilization). i tried some third-party stuff like the Viltrox RF 85mm f/1.8 STM which is great for portraits, but for 35mm and 50mm, Canon's own STM lenses are basically unbeatable for value and autofocus speed.

The non-L versions are 100% worth it. you lose some weather sealing and maybe that "luxury" feel, but the image quality is like 90% there for 20% of the cost. tbh just grab the nifty fifty and start shooting... u wont regret it. gl!! peace
