Hey everyone, I'm looking for a good 23mm lens for my Fujifilm X-T3. I really love the field of view for street photography and some environmental portraits, but my current lens just isn't cutting it in low light. I've been eyeing the Fujinon XF 23mm f/2 and the f/1.4 versions, but I'm torn. The f/2 is smaller and cheaper, which is appealing, but I'm worried about missing that extra stop of light. Also, I'm a bit confused about the difference in image quality and sharpness between the two. Has anyone used both and can offer some insights? What 23mm lens would you recommend, considering low light performance and overall value for the Fujifilm X system?

Hey there!

I've used both the 23mm f/2 and the f/1.4 on my X-T2 and now my X-T4, so I can definitely share my experience. Honestly, if low light is a big concern, go for the f/1.4. That extra stop makes a *huge* difference, especially for street photography at night. I was initially drawn to the f/2 for its size, but I quickly realized I was missing too many shots due to the slower aperture. Yeah, it's sharper corner-to-corner wide open than the f/2, *but* you're usually not shooting street scenes for corner sharpness, right? And stopped down a bit, the f/2 is still great.

The f/1.4 is bigger and heavier, no doubt. But for me, the image quality and low-light capabilities are worth it. Plus, the f/1.4 has a more pleasing bokeh, IMO, for those environmental portraits. I’ve had no complaints and been happy with it.

So, if you can swing the extra cost and don't mind the size, I'd say the 23mm f/1.4 is the way to go. You won't regret it when you're shooting in those dimly lit streets!

Hope this helps!

Hey! Don't forget about third-party options like the Viltrox 23mm f/1.4. It's usually cheaper than the Fuji, and while not weather-sealed, it gives you that fast aperture for low light. Image quality is surprisingly good too, worth a look!

Hey! So, I've been following the thread, and I think it's great you're considering low light performance. But honestly, have you thought about *how often* you'll really need that extra stop? Before dropping a bunch of cash, maybe try bumping up your ISO a bit more with your current lens and see if the noise is actually a deal-breaker for your style. You might be surprised!

Also, consider renting the f/1.4 for a weekend! That way, you can really test it out in your usual shooting conditions without committing to the purchase. Camera stores often have rental options, or even borrow one from a photographer friend if you can. Plus, make sure to check out used lens markets – you might snag a bargain on either the f/2 or f/1.4 if you're patient. Good luck deciding!

Hey! So, everyone's given some great advice on the f/stops and third-party options, but I wanted to throw in a slightly different perspective: the reliability and longevity of your lens, especially if you're shooting in tougher conditions.

While the Viltrox might seem tempting with its price, remember that Fuji's weather sealing (WR) is seriously good. If you're doing street photography, you're gonna be out in the elements – rain, dust, you name it. A lens failing because of a bit of moisture can completely ruin a shoot, and potentially damage your camera body too. That extra $100-$200 you save on a third-party lens *could* end up costing you way more in repairs or replacement down the line. Just something to consider!

Between the Fuji 23mm f/2 and f/1.4, I'd lean towards the f/2 if weather sealing and size are important. It's noticeably smaller, making it more comfortable for all-day carry for street shooting. Yes, you lose that extra stop of light, but honestly, Fujifilm's high ISO performance is so good these days that you can often compensate. Plus, the f/2 is known for being really sharp, even wide open.

If you *absolutely* need that f/1.4 and plan on shooting in questionable weather regularly, you have to weigh the risk versus reward. Maybe invest in some good lens cleaning cloths and be extra careful. At the end of the day, it depends on your shooting style and how risk-averse you are. Just food for thought!

Hope this helps you make a safe decision for your equipment! Good luck!

Hey! It's interesting no one's brought up Sigma's 23mm f/1.4! I know it's a newer option, but it often benchmarks competitively and sometimes you can snag it for a steal compared to Fuji. Might be worth a look at reviews!
