I just picked up an X-T5 for a massive street project in Tokyo starting next Thursday and honestly im kinda panicking. Ive shot Fuji for years but mostly stuck to the older zooms and my trusty X-T3. The problem is the 40mp sensor is just unforgiving and my current kit feels sluggish and bulky for fast moving crowds. I need something small enough to stay discrete but sharp enough to actually utilize all those megapixels. Budget is roughly 900 bucks and I gotta buy it before I fly out.
Should I go with the new 18mm f1.4 or is that too big for street? Or maybe the 33mm f1.4? Which primes are you guys using that actually resolve well on the X-T5 sensor?
> Which primes are you guys using that actually resolve well on the X-T5 sensor? Honestly, to get the most out of that 40MP sensor, you should focus on the newer generation optics. Ive been very satisfied with the Fujifilm XF 33mm f1.4 R LM WR for my high-res work lately. It works well because the linear motor handles the X-T5 autofocus cycles much more efficiently than the older clutch-style primes. If you find that focal length too tight for crowded Tokyo streets, the Fujifilm XF 18mm f1.4 R LM WR is technically superior and resolves fine detail all the way to the edges. Quick tip: stick to lenses released recently to ensure they actually meet the resolving power requirements of that X-Trans 5 HR sensor. The older f2 primes are small and discrete but they definitely show their age when you start cropping into those huge files... no complaints with the newer f1.4 glass tho.
Re: > Which primes are you guys using that... Totally agree, the new LM glass is literally a game changer for the X-T5! Im obsessed with the sharpness.
Im happy with how the newer glass resolves on that sensor, it works well. Do you prefer a wider view for the streets or something tighter tho?
Like someone mentioned, those f1.4 lenses are technically incredible, but honestly i gotta disagree about them being the best fit for your specific Tokyo trip. If you want to be discrete and move through crowds easily, the larger f1.4 lenses might actually work against you. I have been very satisfied with the smaller primes because they keep the camera profile low and the weather resistance is a huge reliability factor when you are shooting outdoors all day.
