According to latest rumors from CR, next two L series VCM lenses will be RF 24mm f/1.4L VCM and RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM. Both lenses will be announced in September, release date soon after announcement.

So which one do you prefer to buy ?

honestly im skipping both because this whole VCM direction canon is taking feels like a step backward for pure photographers. i had a really frustrating shoot recently with a vcm prime where the focus breathing was just ridiculous for my workflow, and unfortunately, it seems they are sacrificing optical character for video-friendly motors. if youre gonna pre-order, watch out for:

  • the vcm units can be way more sensitive to impact than old school ring usm
  • that iris ring only works for video on most bodies which is annoying as hell
  • the weather sealing often feels a bit less robust on these hybrid builds ngl, after fifteen years with this brand, seeing them prioritize hybrid shooters over high-end stills glass is kinda disappointing. i was really hoping for a beastly 50mm refresh, not something that feels like a compromise for youtube content. probably just gonna stick with my old ef glass and an adapter...

Building on the earlier suggestion, I definitely see why the video-centric features might bug some people, but I'm actually pretty happy about this move. I've been holding off on the big f/1.2 glass for years because the price is just brutal for a hobbyist. Last year I almost pulled the trigger on a used Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM with an adapter, but the weight and slow focus kept me away.

  • these 1.4 versions should be way more affordable
  • smaller size is a huge win for travel
  • the vcm focus is usually silent which is nice for church ceremonies I'm mostly looking at the 50mm. If it comes in at a decent price point, it'll save me from having to settle for the non-L glass. I've had a great experience with my Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM so far, but I really miss that L-series weather sealing and color. These rumors basically made my day... finally an upgrade path that doesnt break the bank.
