Hey everyone! I’m currently planning a landscape photography trip to the Pacific Northwest next month, and I’m hitting a bit of a wall regarding my gear. I’m shooting with a Nikon D850 and usually have my 70-200mm f/2.8 lens attached, which makes for a pretty hefty setup. My current studio tripod is a total tank and definitely isn't coming with me on the plane, so I'm on the hunt for a high-quality travel tripod that can actually handle the weight without any annoying vibration.

I’ve been eyeing a few carbon fiber options because I really need to keep the total weight down for long hikes, but I’m terrified of spending a fortune only to find out it can’t support my kit in the wind. I’ve looked at the Peak Design Carbon Travel Tripod and some of the Gitzo Traveler models, but I’m worried about the center column stability when it's fully extended. Stability is my top priority, but it also needs to fold down small enough to fit inside a standard carry-on bag.

Does anyone here use a similar heavy Nikon setup for travel? What are your top recommendations for a sturdy but portable tripod that can handle roughly 15-20 lbs of gear comfortably? I'd love to hear your experiences with specific models that have held up well in the field!

yo, I totally get the anxiety! i shoot with a d850 too and i used to be SO scared of my rig taking a tumble in the wind. Basically, when you've got that heavy 70-200mm, the center of gravity is kinda weird and most travel legs cant handle the torque. if you go too light, vibration will LITERALLY kill your sharpness. since ur looking for a deal, i highkey recommend these: 1. Leofoto LS-284C Ranger Series Carbon Fiber Tripod - a lifesaver for about $300. its stiff cuz there's no center column... just dont overload it!
2. Benro Tortoise 35C Carbon Fiber Tripod - i love this one, usually $350. its AMAZING for stability.
3. Sirui ST-124 Carbon Fiber Tripod - bargain at $250... i think it's basically the best value. id definitely suggest testing the locks at home first tho... safety first!! so yeah, dont overspend if u dont have to lol. gl! 👍

For ur situation, I'd suggest: 1. Sirui AM-284 Carbon Fiber Tripod with A-10R Ball Head vs Gitzo: Much better value.
2. Feisol Tournament CT-3442 Rapid 4-Section Carbon Fiber Tripod vs Peak Design Travel Tripod Carbon Fiber: Feisol is sturdier. I mean, I think the Feisol is ur best choice for that D850. Honestly, dont trust center columns... they're just too risky in the wind!!
