Hey everyone! I’ve been a Nikon user for years and finally made the jump to the mirrorless world with a Z6II a few months ago. I’m absolutely loving the sensor and the autofocus, but I’ve hit a bit of a dilemma when it comes to glass. I’m planning a trip to Europe later this year, and I’m really trying to avoid being that person who spends half the vacation swapping lenses on a busy street corner while my family walks off without me.
Right now, I have the 24-70mm f/4 kit lens, which is great and super sharp, but sometimes I feel like it just doesn't have quite enough reach when I’m out exploring. I’ve been looking at a few different options to serve as my primary walk-around lens—basically something that can stay on the camera 90% of the time for street photography, landscapes, and the occasional candid portrait.
I’ve heard amazing things about the Z 24-120mm f/4 S, and the extra reach seems perfect, but I’m also wondering if the Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 is a better all-in-one choice despite the slower aperture at the long end. Weight and size are definitely factors for me since I’ll be walking miles every day, and I really do not want to deal with a massive setup hanging off my neck for ten hours at a time. On the other hand, part of me is tempted to just go super minimal with something like the 40mm f/2 pancake lens for the weight savings alone, though I worry I would miss having the versatility of a zoom lens.
My budget is somewhat flexible, but I’d like to keep it under $1,100 if possible. I’m really torn between prioritizing the superior image quality of the S-line versus the sheer convenience of a massive focal range. For those of you who have been shooting with the Z system for a while, what has been your favorite go-to lens for travel or general day-to-day use? If you could only bring one single lens for a week-long city trip where you're doing a mix of everything, which one would you pick and why?
ok so i actually tried the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR but unfortunately it was not as good as expected in low light.
Curious: r u shooting mostly in daylight? I was sooo happy with my Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S, but low light was scary... lesson learned, u need the Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2!
Curious about one thing: do you shoot at night?
> I’m really torn between prioritizing the superior image quality of the S-line versus the sheer convenience of a massive focal range. Unfortunately, i had issues with those high-range zooms and found the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR was not as good as expected for long-term reliability. Its just too many moving parts for a serious trip. You dont want a lens to fail when you're miles from a repair shop. Just get the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24-120mm f/4 S. It is disappointing to lug around more weight, but the S-line build is the only thing i trust when i need something to actually work. Better safe than sorry.
