Which Nikon Z mount prime lens is best for street photography enthusiasts?

So Ive been staring at my Z6ii for about an hour trying to decide what to bring for my trip to Tokyo next month. I finally saved up enough for a proper prime lens—budget is about $800 max—because Im really tired of lugging around that kit zoom. Its just too big and people definitely notice you more when youre trying to take candid shots on the street.

Ive done a bunch of reading and everyone keeps pointing toward the 35mm f1.8 S. People say the sharpness is incredible and it handles flare really well which would be great for all the neon lights at night in Shinjuku. But then I look at photos of it and it looks pretty long. Is it actually annoying to carry around all day? I dont want to feel like a pro photographer, I just want to blend in and not have a giant lens barrel sticking out of my face while I'm trying to be low key.

On the other hand, Ive seen a lot of love for the 40mm f2 pancake. Its so small it almost makes the camera look like a point and shoot which is awesome for street stuff. But I read some reviews saying its not that sharp until you stop it down to f4, and that the autofocus can be a bit jittery in low light. Thats my main concern... if Im walking around at 10 PM and I miss a shot because the lens was hunting, Ill be pretty annoyed.

  • 35mm 1.8 S: Better glass but big?
  • 40mm 2.0: Perfect size but maybe cheap feeling?
  • 28mm 2.8: Some people say this is better for tight streets?

Im just really stuck between wanting the best possible image quality and wanting something that doesnt hurt my neck after 10 miles of walking. Plus the 35mm is basically at the top of my budget while the 40mm is super cheap. Is the S-line quality really that noticeable for street photography where things are a bit gritty anyway? Just curious what you guys think is the sweet spot for Z mount street setups...

You should totally consider the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8! Its such a steal and leaves you with so much extra cash for your Tokyo trip. I always check 'Photography Life' or 'Christopher Frost' on YouTube for side-by-side tests when Im torn.

  • Fits in a jacket pocket
  • Wide enough for tiny alleys
  • Way cheaper than S glass The 28mm is a total gem for staying low-key!

Unfortunately, I had issues with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S size in Shinjuku. The Nikon NIKKOR Z 26mm f/2.8 was not as good as expected for night shots, though it's tiny.

I really wanted to love the Nikon NIKKOR Z 35mm f/1.8 S for travel, but unfortunately, the size is a major drawback for street photography. Its remarkably sharp, but it lacks that compact feel you need to blend in. I also had issues with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 during a recent trip; the autofocus was not as good as expected in dim lighting, often hunting when I needed it to be instantaneous. It feels a bit cheap in the hand too. The Nikon NIKKOR Z 28mm f/2.8 is decent for wide shots, but the edge performance is disappointing compared to the S-line glass. If you prioritize image quality, you're basically forced to carry the heavy 35mm, which is frustrating because it defeats the purpose of a compact setup. Honestly, the current prime lineup is a bit of a letdown for street work right now.
