Hi fellow photography enthusiasts! I'm diving into the retro camera world and feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options. I'm drawn to that classic film aesthetic and want to slow down from digital shooting.
Looking for something with solid build quality that won't break the bank as a beginner. Should I go with a classic 35mm SLR like a Pentax K1000 or Canon AE-1? Or maybe something more unique like a medium format camera?
I'm interested in street photography and portraits mainly. What would you recommend for someone just starting with film? Any particular models to avoid or seek out? Also curious about reliable places to buy used gear. Thanks!
Fujifilm X-T5 all the way! The Fujifilm X-T5 ticks all the boxes for both a retro camera, with its beautiful old-school looks and manual dials, but also the latest cutting-edge tech inside with a huge 40MP sensor. Been using mine for street photography and the film simulations are just chef's kiss. The tactile controls make it so much fun to use - you actually want to pick it up and shoot with it. Plus the X-T5's 40MP X-Trans 5 BSI sensor makes it the highest-resolution APS-C camera on the market.
If you're on a budget, don't sleep on the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV - it offers the superb quality of the OM-D series into a beginner-friendly – and, crucially, affordable – camera body with a retro look. The 5-axis in-body image stabilization keeps your shots sharp in low light and reduces camera shake and motion blur to create crisp images. Perfect starter retro camera!
I love fuji cameras.
