Honestly im just totally fed up with the 24-70 f4 kit lens that came with my Z6. Its just so bulky and people in downtown Chicago keep looking at me like im some kind of professional paparazzi when I just want to blend in and get some candid shots. I missed a great shot today because the lens was just too clunky and noticeable. I have about 700 bucks saved up and really need something that is actually discreet.

I need something that is:

  • small enough to fit in a jacket pocket
  • fast enough for evening shadows
  • under $800 preferably

Is the 40mm f2 actually good or should I just shell out for the 35mm 1.8 S even though its bigger? Or is there some third party stuff im missing...

I've shot street for years and that kit lens is definitely a spotlight you dont want. You might want to consider the Nikon NIKKOR Z 40mm f/2 because it is incredibly low profile. Be careful with the 35mm S-line since it is actually quite long for a jacket pocket.

i actually went through this exact same thing when i first started doing downtown shoots. the 35mm 1.8 s is a beast for quality but its way too long and people still notice you. the 40mm f2 is basically a cap lens compared to it. i found that staying under that 50mm total length is the only way to truly blend in without getting those weird looks. just a few things to watch out for with the budget glass:

  • the mount is plastic on the 40mm and 28mm so dont go tossing your bag around too hard
  • edge sharpness isnt actually that great until you stop down to f/4 or f/5.6
  • it feels a bit like a toy if youre used to the solid kit lens build honestly though for around 300 bucks it is a steal and keeps your z6 from looking like a professional rig. i saw some folks over at Smartphone Board talking about mobile workflows for street stuff which might be worth a look once you get your setup sorted. id say go for the 40mm and keep the extra 400 bucks for a weekend trip somewhere new.
