I just finally upgraded to a Z6 and Im seriously so excited to start shooting portraits!! My sisters wedding is coming up in three weeks in Seattle and I really need a proper lens.

I spent a ton of time looking at reviews and everyone says the Nikon 85mm 1.8 S is the gold standard but then I see people online saying the Viltrox 85mm is just as good for way less money. I only have about $600 left in my budget and I dont want to miss shots because of autofocus lag people mentioned with third party glass. Should I go for a used Nikon S lens or is the Viltrox reliable enough for an actual event?

Building on the earlier suggestion, the 85mm unfortunately proved too restrictive for busy weddings. I recommend a used Nikon NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S for reliable focus and better indoor versatility under $600.

@Reply #1 - good point. Had a moment to think about this more.

  • My cheap setup once hunted endlessly during a dim processional.
  • Native motors are just more reliable under pressure.

Honestly, native glass is just amazing and I totally agree with the point about motor reliability! I spent years trying to save pennies on third-party glass, but after one nightmare reception where my focus just hunted endlessly in the dark, I switched to the S-line and it was a total game changer. My first wedding with the Z6 and the 50mm f/1.8 S was just fantastic... it never missed a beat! If youre worried about the wedding, sticking with the Nikon 50mm S is definitely the move because native speed is vital. I actually just added some extra bits to my amazon cart share because I love this system so much. Stick with the S glass for the peace of mind!
