Hi all! I'm getting into sports photography and need advice on Canon bodies. I'll mainly be shooting basketball, soccer, and track events from the sidelines. Fast autofocus and high burst rates are crucial, plus good performance in varying light conditions since some venues aren't well-lit. I'm torn between the R6 Mark II, R7, and maybe stretching budget for an R5. Currently using older crop sensor DSLR. What would you recommend for someone transitioning to mirrorless? Thanks for any insights!

Canon EOS R1 is the best choice, if you don't mind the price.

Been shooting sports professionally for 8 years. Hands down, the Canon R3 is the gold standard if budget isn't a concern. 30fps burst, incredible autofocus tracking, and phenomenal low-light performance. I've shot everything from indoor basketball to evening football games with it. The R6 Mark II is also fantastic for the price point - gives you most of the R3's performance at half the cost. Both have that dual-pixel AF that just locks onto athletes and doesn't let go.

I just found this thread and it's making me remember how much I stressed over my own transition last year. I’m super cautious with big purchases (I spent like three months reading market reports and user reviews first). I looked at moving to other brands for a bit, but I eventually decided that sticking with the same system was the safest play for me.

From what I’ve gathered in my research:
- Their professional mirrorless lineup is basically leading the pack for tracking right now.
- The newer lens mount seems like it’s going to be the standard for a long time.
- The ecosystem is just more reliable for sports compared to some of the smaller brands.

Basically, if you just pick any body from their high-end mirrorless series, you're going to be blown away. It’s a bit of a leap of faith, but the reliability is there (at least that's what worked for me). Just go with the brand you already know, you really can't go wrong with their latest stuff.

Just switched from Nikon to Canon last year specifically for sports. Went with the R6 Mark II and absolutely love it. The animal/human eye detection works incredibly well for tracking runners and players. Battery life is solid, and having IBIS helps when you're handholding longer lenses. The 40fps electronic shutter is overkill for most sports, but it's nice to have when the action gets really intense.
