What is the absolute sharpest lens for landscapes on a Z8 that wont break my back or my bank account too bad? I am leaving for a two-week solo trip to the Highlands in Iceland in literally 12 days and I still havent pulled the trigger on a wide angle because I keep second guessing myself. I have been looking at the Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S because everyone says its the gold standard for zooms but then I read a bunch of threads saying the Z 20mm f1.8 S prime is actually sharper in the corners and has less flare when you are shooting into the sun which I plan to do a lot. I really need that edge-to-edge crispness for big prints later on. Some people say the 14-30mm f4 is fine but I am worried the 45 megapixel sensor is gonna show every little bit of softness on that cheaper glass especially at the edges. My budget is around 2200 bucks but I could stretch it a bit if the quality is night and day. Is the 14-24 really worth the extra weight and the weird filter situation compared to just getting a sharp prime like the 20mm or maybe even the 24mm? I just want the best possible glass for this sensor before I hop on the plane...

To add to the point above: I would be really careful with the f4 zoom because the resolving power might not keep up with that 45MP sensor at the edges. Since you are worried about the budget, you might want to consider the prime route. You can grab the Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S for way less than the 14-24mm and it is technically superior in several categories.

  • It has way better flare resistance because of the simplified optical formula.
  • You wont need a specialized filter system, which saves you another $300 easily.
  • Corner sharpness stays high even when you are stopped down. I really want to make sure you have the right kit for Iceland. Just wondering though... what is the widest lens you have used before? If you really need 14mm for those tight canyon shots, the prime might feel a bit restrictive.

You might wanna try the Nikon NIKKOR Z 24mm f/1.8 S so you dont blow the budget.

  • very sharp corners
  • easiest to filter Could be better for your wallet before the trip.

Man, I wish I could tell you the cheaper route works, but unfortunately, my experience with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S on the Z8 was a total letdown. I took it out to the Tetons last year and those corners were just... mushy. It is a decent travel lens, but that high-res sensor is totally unforgiving and I ended up regretting most of my shots. If you are printing big, dont even bother. I eventually bit the bullet on the Nikon NIKKOR Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S and while it is amazing glass, that weird filter holder situation is a total pain in the neck when you are fumbling in the wind. If you really want that absolute edge-to-edge crispness for Iceland, the Nikon NIKKOR Z 20mm f/1.8 S is actually the winner. Its sharper in the corners than the zoom and handles flare way better when shooting into the sun. Honestly, the 20mm is the best glass for that sensor if you can live without the zoom range.
