im so frustrated with this camera honestly i bought an olympus omd thing because i wanted to take cool photos of the streets at night like those neon signs and people walking around but everything i take looks like a blurry mess and super grainy too. i think the lens that came with it just isnt good enough for when it gets dark? someone told me i need a fast prime lens but i have no idea what that even means or how to pick one there are so many numbers and i dont get why some are cheap and others cost a fortune it makes no sense. im going on a trip to new york in three weeks and i really wanted to get some good shots of times square and the subway but right now i just want to throw the camera out the window because i cant figure it out. my budget is maybe 350 dollars at the most because i already spent so much on the camera body itself. i just want something that makes the pictures look sharp even if i dont have a tripod.

there are a few things im totally stuck on:

  • what does f1.8 actually do compared to f4
  • why are some lenses so much bigger than others
  • is 17mm or 25mm better for walking around a city

sorry if this is a really basic question but i am just so lost with all the technical talk online... what is the best lens for a beginner like me who just wants to take night photos without them looking like total garbage?

Go for the Olympus M.Zuiko 17mm f1.8. 17mm is better for NYC streets since you can fit the buildings in. f1.8 is basically a wider hole than f4, so it catches more light and stops that blur.

  • 17mm: wider city view
  • 25mm: tighter feel
  • Size: usually better glass or build If youre short on cash, the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f1.7 ASPH is usually under $200 and works fine.

> what does f1.8 actually do compared to f4 Mathematically, f/1.8 allows roughly four times more light to reach your sensor than f/4. This is crucial because it lets you use a fast shutter speed to freeze motion at night... otherwise youll just get blur. In my experience, the Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH is a solid middle ground between 17mm and 25mm. Its compact and very sharp. Check out the technical data on DPReview for performance benchmarks.

You definitely need the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 25mm f1.8! It is amazing for low light and fits your budget perfectly.

  • f1.8 lets in way more light than f4, which stops the blur!
  • I prefer 25mm for street shots as it feels more natural. Youre gonna be blown away by the difference, it literally saves those night shots!
