Best flash for Canon EOS R5 for indoor events?

I’m shooting indoor events with a Canon EOS R5 (mostly receptions and corporate mixers) and I’m struggling to find a flash setup that’s reliable and easy to use. I’d like something that supports TTL and high-speed sync, recycles quickly, and doesn’t overheat after a couple hours of on-and-off shooting. I usually bounce off low/white ceilings when possible, but some venues have higher ceilings or mixed lighting, so consistency matters. Budget is around $300–$600, but I’d rather buy once and be done. What flash (and any must-have modifiers) would you recommend for the R5 for indoor events?

Re: "For your situation, I’d suggest the Godox V1C..." — yeah, that’s a solid direction for event work, but before I steer you toward a specific buy…

- **Quick question:** are you trying to stay **on-camera bounce** most of the night, or do you also want to go **off-camera** (light stand in a corner) sometimes?
- **Also:** are you OK with a **bigger flash** (more power, more weight), or do you want something that stays compact on the R5?

If you’re mostly on-camera, here are a few alternatives (TTL + HSS) I’d compare:

1) **Option A: Canon Speedlite EL-5 (used/refurb if you can)**
- Pros: Canon TTL consistency is honestly hard to beat; great reliability; good thermal management.
- Cons: Price can creep above $600, and it depends on what’s available used.

2) **Option B: Profoto A10 for Canon (used)**
- Pros: Super consistent TTL, fast recycle, very “it just works” for events.
- Cons: New is way over budget; used might still be a stretch.

3) **Option C: Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT (used)**
- Pros: Workhorse, good overheat behavior vs older 600EX-RT (in my experience).
- Cons: AA batteries = slower recycle unless you run good NiMH.

- **Must-have modifier (cheap, high value):** a simple bounce card + small diffuser like MagMod MagBounce 2 if you bounce a lot.

Answer those 2 questions and I’ll point you to the best “buy once” pick for your venues + shooting style.

For your situation, I’d suggest the Godox V1C TTL Li-Ion Round Head Flash for Canon—I’ve used it on event nights and the Li-ion battery + fast recycle is a lifesaver, and it’s been way less “thermal drama” than AA flashes for me. Pair it with the Godox XPro-C TTL Wireless Flash Trigger for Canon so you can go off-camera when ceilings get sketchy. Must-have? A simple bounce card like MagMod MagBounce 2 (pricey but quick). Hope this helps!

Building on the earlier suggestion, if you want something event-proof (recycle + heat management), I’d look at:

- Godox V860III-C TTL Li-Ion Speedlite for Canon — IMO the best “workhorse” in your budget. Li-ion keeps recycle consistent, and I’ve had fewer overheat headaches vs AA units on long receptions.
- Godox V860II-C TTL Li-Ion Speedlite for Canon — older but still super reliable, usually cheaper, same general idea.
- Modifier: MagMod MagBounce 2 + MagMod MagGrip 2 — fast on/off, great for bounce and mixed ceilings without fiddling.

Safety-first tip: run it at lower power (higher ISO/wider aperture) and you’ll get WAY more consistency and less thermal throttling. Hope this helps!
