Is the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM a worthwhile investment for portrait photography specifically when paired with a Canon EOS R? I'm drawn to its affordability and compact size, but I wonder how its image quality and bokeh compare to more expensive options. Do you find it limiting for portraits, or does it offer enough flexibility? What are your thoughts on its performance in various lighting conditions for portraiture?

I absolutely love the 50mm focal length for portraits! I remember when I first started out with my old film setup, the nifty fifty was basically the only lens I used for like three years straight. It really taught me everything about composition and light. The RF 50mm on the EOS R is honestly a little beast for the size and I love how light it feels when I'm walking around all day! To give you a better technical breakdown tho, I've gotta ask a couple things to see if it really fits your style:

  • Are you planning on doing mostly full-body shots or are you looking to get those really tight, creamy headshots where the background totally melts away?
  • Do you usually shoot in a controlled studio setting or are you out chasing natural light in the streets where you wont have as much control?

The RF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a great starting point for portraits on your EOS R, especially given its price and portability. While more expensive lenses offer superior bokeh and sharpness, this nifty fifty can still produce pleasing results. It's true the focal length might feel limiting for tight headshots on a full-frame body, but it excels for environmental portraits. Some users find its low-light performance acceptable, but you'll want to watch for noise at higher ISOs. Overall, it's a solid budget-friendly option, but consider upgrading later for creamier bokeh and sharper images.
