What's the best all-around lens recommendation for a Canon Rebel T7i user who's just starting out in photography? I'm looking for something versatile enough to capture everyday moments, travel photos, and maybe even dabble in portraits and landscapes. Should I prioritize image stabilization, a specific focal length range, or something else entirely? What are your experiences with different lenses on this camera body, and which one provided the best balance of quality, functionality, and ease of use for beginners?
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm kit lens that comes with the T7i is actually a solid starting point. Don't let people convince you it's junk - the newer STM version is surprisingly sharp and the image stabilization helps a lot. It covers wide angle for landscapes, normal for portraits, and short telephoto for some subject isolation. Learn this lens inside and out before spending money on anything else. You might be surprised how capable it is.
@Reply #1 - good point! I totally agree about learning the basics first. Honestly, I would suggest just sticking with any of the standard zoom options from Canon for a while. When I was starting out with my T7i, I was so obsessed with getting that pro look that I rushed out and bought a bunch of random glass that just ended up frustrating me. Be careful about jumping into specialized lenses too early... you really need to figure out if you're a landscape person or a portrait person first. You might want to consider how the autofocus behaves on older tech too. I once bought a used lens that hunted so much it was basically useless for kids or pets. Just get a basic Canon zoom and use it until you feel like it's actually holding you back. Most of the time, the technical limitations are actually just us not knowing the settings yet lol.
