I am honestly losing my mind trying to pick a solid prime for my 5D. Everything online says the nifty fifty is a must-have but it feels like a plastic toy and the bokeh is way too jittery for the professional look I want. Then I see everyone hyping up the 35mm f/1.4L II but it's way out of my budget and I've read weird things about focus accuracy on older DSLRs compared to the new mirrorless stuff. I have about 800 bucks saved for a used lens before I shoot a wedding in Chicago next month and I just need something sharp. What are the actually good EF primes for someone who isnt made of money?

Been thinking about your 5D setup and that wedding coming up. You really gotta be careful with third-party lenses on older DSLR bodies because focus calibration can be a total nightmare. Like someone mentioned, 35mm glass is usually the sweet spot for weddings, but I would suggest the Tamron SP series over the Sigma Art if you are worried about consistency. The Sigma glass is pretty but the AF can be jumpy on older EF mounts without the dock. If I were in your shoes with 800 bucks, I would look at:

  • Tamron SP 35mm f/1.8 Di VC USD for Canon EF
  • Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM The 135mm is an absolute beast for ceremonies when you cant get close. Just make sure to test any used copy for front or back focusing issues. Honestly, dont just trust the seller... verify the focus accuracy yourself before you head to Chicago. It makes a huge difference.

Re: "I'm satisfied with these specific EF lenses:Sigma 50mm..."

  • I definitely agree on the Sigma, but honestly, it is kindof heavy. Using the Canon EF 35mm f/2 IS USM has made me very satisfied because it is reliable. The image stabilization provides a necessary safety margin during long ceremonies. Quick tip: verify your focus accuracy with a calibration chart before the wedding day to avoid surprises.

I'm satisfied with these specific EF lenses:

Regarding what #3 said about the 35mm f/2 IS... honestly, I've been so happy with that choice for years. When the light drops during a ceremony, that stabilization is a total security blanket. For your budget, you could actually grab two reliable lenses:

In my experience, I've tried many. I think the winners are:

  • a used 85mm
  • some 35mm glass Not sure on prices tho. Selling kidneys hurts.
