What are the must-have accessories for a new Canon R6 owner?

Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a Canon R6 last week, and I am absolutely loving the autofocus performance so far. I’m upgrading from an older DSLR (an 80D), and while the jump to full-frame mirrorless is super exciting, I’m quickly realizing that a lot of my old kit might need an update to keep up with this body.

I’ve already got the EF-EOS R mount adapter on my list since I have some legacy glass I want to keep using, but I’m torn on whether the control ring version is actually worth the extra money for the added functionality. Also, I’m a bit confused about memory cards for this beast. Since the R6 has dual UHS-II slots, should I be investing in high-speed V60 or V90 SD cards if I want to dabble in 4K video, or is that overkill for mostly stills? I’ve also noticed the battery life is a bit shorter than my old DSLR, so I’m looking for recommendations on reliable spare batteries or even a solid external charger.

I’m mostly shooting a mix of portraits and some occasional wildlife. Aside from the obvious basics, what are the absolute 'must-have' accessories that you think every new R6 owner should grab right away to really get the most out of this camera?

yo! congrats on the R6, seriously it's such a beast. over the years, i've tried many different setups, and i remember when i switched from my old DSLR, the sticker shock for accessories was SO real lol. ngl, i tried the fancy control ring adapter but ended up returning it. in my experience, the basic Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R for around $99 is all u need. i keep my hand on the lens anyway, so that ring just felt awkward and definitely wasnt worth the extra $100. for cards, i think V90 is total overkill unless ur doing high-bitrate video. i use the Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB SDXC UHS-II Card which is usually about $40 and it handles wildlife bursts perfectly fine... maybe dont waste cash on V90 just yet. also, the battery life is definitely shorter than the 80D... i grabbed the BM Premium LP-E6NH High Capacity Replacement Battery 2-Pack for like $35. they work great and save u a ton over the $80 Canon ones. lesson i learned? budget gear works 95% as well for a fraction of the price. cheers!

> I’m torn on whether the control ring version is actually worth the extra money... Totally agree with the above. In my experience, the control ring adapter is basically a gimmick if ur used to the dials on the R6 body anyway. tbh, save ur cash for better media. Since u mentioned wildlife, avoid the cheap cards. You dont need V90 overkill for an R6, but for 4K and those long bursts, I highly recommend the ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold 128GB. It handles the buffer way better than standard UHS-I cards... Also, a word of caution on batteries: the R6 is REALLY picky. If u want that max 12fps mechanical burst for wildlife, u really need the Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery. Most generic ones wont trigger the high-speed 'H+' mode consistently once they drain a bit. Stick to OEM for reliability. gl!

i had a cheap battery swell once, so i'm satisfied with the Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery now. definitely get the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-II for safer video recording!!

Jumping in here... I totally agree that V90 cards are overkill. The R6 bitrates just dont demand that kind of throughput, honestly. Before I suggest some power options, are you looking strictly at OEM batteries or are you open to third-party brands? I've noticed the R6 can be a bit picky with how it displays the recharge performance on the non-Canon ones compared to the legacy DSLR bodies, and it might affect your burst rates if the voltage isn't consistent.
