Im finally moving over to the L-mount system and just picked up an SL2 and a Panasonic S5II as my second body and honestly I am so pumped to get these out in the field. I've got a couple of weddings coming up in Chicago next month and really need to nail down a flash setup that works across both cameras without any weirdness. I did some digging and saw everyone talking about the Leica SF60 but it looks suspiciously like the Nissin i60A just with a massive price hike... like is the firmware actually different or am I just paying for the red dot? Then there is the Godox V1-O which some people say is perfect for Lumix but I read a thread where someone said the TTL on the Leica side is super inconsistent with it. I really need:

  • solid TTL that works on both bodies
  • fast recycle times for dance floor shots
  • something durable cuz I tend to be a bit rough on my gear when I'm rushing
  • keeping it under $600 for now

Does the Godox system actually talk to the SL2 properly or should I just bite the bullet on the official Leica stuff even though it hurts my wallet? Or maybe there is some mid-range option I'm totally missing here...

Building on the earlier suggestion, unfortunately cross-brand TTL on L-mount is still pretty disappointing. I had issues with sync timing on the SL2 using standard Panasonic-spec flashes... it just wont behave sometimes. You should check out the Nissin MG80 Pro Professional Flash for Olympus/Panasonic.

  • Quartz flash tube for superior heat resistance
  • Uses Li-ion 14500 batteries for quick recycling
  • Way better build quality for rough handling Its basically the pro version of what Leica rebrands but without the markup.

Regarding what #1 said about "In my experience, you're definitely paying for that..."

  • I would urge some caution before jumping straight to the cheapest option. When you're dealing with professional wedding work, reliability is everything. Before I give a full recommendation, could you clarify if you'll be using these primarily on-camera, or if you need them to work with a wireless trigger system too? If you want to avoid the "Leica tax" while maintaining a stable TTL connection, you might want to consider:
  • Nissin MG80 Pro Flash for Micro Four Thirds
  • Westcott FJ80 II M Universal 80Ws Speedlight I would suggest focusing on the Nissin MG series. Since they're the OEM for Leica, the protocol handshake is usually much safer than Godox. Just be careful with the hot shoe mounting tho. Make sure to verify your firmware versions immediately because Leica can be temperamental with third-party timing...

In my experience, you're definitely paying for that red dot with the Leica SF 60 Compact Flash. It's basically a Nissin. I've tried many setups over the years and Godox is way more practical.
