Prime Day is literally right around the corner and im staring at my open tabs like a crazy person trying to decide if i should just pull the trigger now or wait for the actual day. I have this huge mountain biking trip out to Moab planned for the last week of August so I need to get something soon so i have time to practice with it before I go. My budget is pretty capped at $350 max for the camera itself because i also need to buy some mounts and extra batteries because nobody wants a dead camera halfway down a trail right?
So I was thinking about the GoPro Hero 12 because it seems like the safest bet and everyone uses them but ive read so many horror stories about them overheating in the sun and Moab is gonna be scorching hot. Then I look at the DJI Osmo Action 4 and the magnetic mounting system honestly looks like a game changer for swapping between my chest mount and the handlebars quickly without fumbling with those annoying thumb screws. My logic was that the DJI might actually be more reliable in the heat but then i worry if the image quality is actually as good as the GoPro or if the colors are gonna look weird.
And then there is the Insta360 Ace Pro which looks cool with that flip screen and the Leica lens but its usually way more expensive so unless it hits a massive discount on Prime Day its probably out of reach for me. Im really torn between the Hero 12 and the Action 4 specifically. If the Hero 12 drops to like $299 do i just grab it and hope for the best with the heat or is the DJI at the same price a better long term move for someone who is mostly doing high vibration stuff like biking? I keep going back and forth on whether the hypersmooth on the GoPro is actually noticeably better than the rocksteady on the DJI when you are hitting real bumps. What are you guys seeing in terms of leaked deals or what do you think is gonna have the biggest price cut because i honestly cant decide...
Look, if you're hitting Moab in August, forget the GoPro. Honestly. I've been riding for years and while the GoPro HERO12 Black 5.3K60 Video is a beast for image quality, it absolutely will shut down on you if it's 100 degrees and you're not moving fast enough to keep it cool. Trust me, I've had many sessions ruined by that little thermal icon. In my experience, the DJI Osmo Action 4 Standard Combo 4K/120fps is the smarter play for a few reasons:
