Hey everyone! I finally bit the bullet and picked up a Fujifilm X-T5 last week, and man, I am absolutely in love with the tactile feel and that gorgeous 40MP sensor. I’m transitioning over from an older X-T2, so while I’m already a fan of the Fuji ecosystem, this feels like a massive leap in terms of both tech and ergonomics.
Since I’m planning to use this camera primarily for a mix of street photography and an upcoming trip through Japan, I want to make sure I’m fully geared up before I head out. I’ve already noticed a few things right out of the box that have me thinking. For one, those 40MP files are no joke—my older, slower SD cards are definitely struggling to keep up with the write speeds, especially when I'm firing off a few bursts. I'm also slightly concerned about the battery life for a full day of shooting high-res images, even with the newer NP-W235 batteries.
Another thing is the handling. While I love how compact the body is, it feels a little shallow in my hand when I mount my heavier glass, like the 16-55mm f/2.8. I’ve seen people debating between getting a dedicated MHG-XT5 metal grip or just a simple thumb rest, and I’m torn on which direction to go. I want to keep the kit portable, but I don't want my hand cramping up after two hours in the city.
I’ve got a budget of about $300–$400 left to get this kit 'field-ready.' I’m not looking for unnecessary fluff; I just want the essentials that actually improve the shooting experience or help protect the body.
For those of you who have been putting the X-T5 through its paces, what are your absolute 'can't-live-without' accessories? Are there specific SD cards (V60 vs V90) or strap systems that you feel pair perfectly with this specific body?
Sooo, here's what I recommend based on my own switch. Basically, those huge 40MP files need speed or you'll actually risk your buffer locking up. I suggest picking up the Kingston Canvas React Plus V60 128GB SDXC UHS-II—it’s much cheaper than V90 cards but still handles bursts fine. For the 16-55mm, the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for FUJIFILM X-T5 is a MUST for ergonomics. Just a warning tho: be careful with third-party batteries. Stick to the official Fujifilm NP-W235 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery for your Japan trip to stay safe. gl!

Ok so, not to disagree, but I'd actually suggest a different approach. Unfortunately, those metal grips are way too bulky! The SmallRig Thumb Grip for Fujifilm X-T5 4008 is only $25 and keeps the kit tiny for Japan. Also, V90s are crazy expensive... the SABRENT Rocket V60 256GB SDXC UHS-II is way better value and handles the 40MP bursts fine for half the price. gl!
i'm super happy with Lexar Professional 2000x SDXC UHS-II V90 128GB cards... 300MB/s speeds handle those 40MP bursts flawlessly. also, the SmallRig L-Shape Grip for Fujifilm X-T5 4136 totally fixes that handling issue tho. gl!
Sooo, basically, I found that sticking to high-durability storage and official power was the only way to stay safe on the road. I went through this last year when I first got my X-T5 and honestly, my biggest regret was trying to go cheap on the essentials... it was super disappointing when my budget stuff started failing in the field.
I actually had issues with standard SD cards physically cracking under pressure, which is why I eventually swapped to the Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II 128GB V90. They're ribless and basically indestructible, so I don't have to worry about the card falling apart inside the camera slot. When you're shooting those massive 40MP files, having that physical safety is just as important as the write speed tbh.
Handling that 16-55mm f/2.8 is no joke either—it’s so heavy compared to the body! I was highkey terrified of dropping it in crowded streets, so I started using the Peak Design Slide Lite Camera Strap. The anchor system feels way more secure than standard rings, and it gave me the confidence to carry it all day without worrying about a strap failure. Also, even though they're pricey, I only trust the official Fujifilm NP-W235 Li-Ion Rechargeable Battery now. I've had third-party ones swell up before and I didn't want to risk my brand new sensor just to save a few bucks. It’s kinda a bummer but the safety is worth it... anyway, hope that helps you get ready for Japan! peace.
Congrats on the upgrade. I remember when I moved up from the X-T2... it really is a different world. Before I chime in on the gear tho, are you mostly focusing on stills or do you plan on doing a lot of 4k video while youre in Japan? And are you more of a neck strap person or a wrist strap guy? Honestly, I used to shoot with a Sony A7 series and while the tech was great, it never felt as soul-ful as the Fuji dials. It actually reminds me of this old Nikon FE I used to carry everywhere back in college. I spent like three hours today just digging through old photo albums from that era and man, the grain on those shots was something else. I kinda miss the simplicity of one lens and ten rolls of film for a whole month... anyway, let us know about the video side of things so we can narrow down the card specs.
