Hey everyone! I’ve recently made the jump over to the L-mount system—picked up a Lumix S5IIX—and I am absolutely loving the image quality and the autofocus performance so far. However, as I’ve started building out my first proper video rig with a SmallRig cage and some side handles, I’m realizing that the built-in articulating screen just isn't cutting it for everything.
I’ve been doing a lot of run-and-gun outdoor shoots lately, and trying to judge exposure or nail manual focus on that small 3-inch screen in broad daylight is becoming a real headache. I’m definitely in need of a solid external monitor, but after dropping a significant amount of cash on the camera body and a couple of Sigma Art primes, my remaining budget is a bit thin. I’m looking for something that hits that 'sweet spot' of being affordable without being total junk.
Ideally, I’m looking for a 5-inch or 5.5-inch monitor that is lightweight enough not to make the rig top-heavy. It needs to have a high-brightness display (at least 1000+ nits) so I don't have to carry a sun hood everywhere. Support for custom 3D LUTs is a must-have for me, as I shoot almost exclusively in V-Log and need to see a preview of the final look while I’m filming.
I’ve looked into some of the entry-level options from brands like Feelworld and Desview, but I’m a little worried about the color accuracy and how well they hold up to daily wear and tear. I'm also curious about how you guys are mounting these to your L-mount rigs—do you prefer a cold shoe mount or a magic arm? And for power, are you sticking with the standard NP-F batteries, or are you running a D-tap cable from a V-mount?
My budget is ideally under $250. I don’t necessarily need recording features (like the Ninja V) right now; I just need a reliable, sharp display to help me compose my shots. For those of you shooting video on L-mount cameras, what budget-friendly monitor have you found that actually survives a professional workflow? I'd love to hear your recommendations!
yo, similar situation here - I went through this exact struggle last year after dropping way too much cash on my L-mount setup. Honestly, after buying the Panasonic LUMIX S5IIX Mirrorless Camera and a few Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art Lens for L-Mount primes, my bank account was crying lol. I tried squinting at the built-in screen for a midday beach shoot and basically ended up with a bunch of overexposed footage... super frustrating. I ended up looking for something under that $250 mark too. While those Feelworld and Desview options already mentioned are solid, I actually tried out the Shimbol M5 5.5 Inch 3D LUT Field Monitor cuz it's usually around $170 and hits that 1200 nits sweet spot. It’s light enough that it doesnt tip my rig over, which was a huge concern for me too. The color accuracy actually surprised me?? It supports custom LUTs via SD card which is how I previewed my V-Log. Regarding your mounting question, I started with a basic cold shoe mount but found it kinda limited for low-angle shots. I switched to the SmallRig Swivel and Tilt Adjustable Monitor Mount with Cold Shoe 2905B and never looked back. It’s way more secure than a cheap magic arm imo. For power, I usually run smaller NP-F550 Rechargeable Li-ion Batteries to keep the weight down, though I keep a D-tap cable in my bag for when I’m using a V-mount plate. Ngl, those bigger batteries make the S5IIX feel like a cinder block after a few hours of shooting!! Anyway, definitely don't settle for "total junk" even on a budget. There are some gems out there if u look closely at the specs. Good luck with the build!!
Definitely check out the Desview R6 UHB 5.5 Inch 2800nit Touch Screen Monitor. Its *perfect* for outdoor V-Log on the S5IIX and lowkey the best ultra-bright screen for that budget. Seriously a game changer!
sooo i totally feel u on the daylight struggle. i spent way too long squinting at my S5IIX before i finally grabbed the Feelworld LUT5 5.5 Inch Ultra Bright 3000nit Monitor. it’s literally been a game changer for v-log exposure! • Feelworld LUT5 5.5 Inch Ultra Bright 3000nit Monitor (~$165)
• Desview R6 UHB 5.5 Inch 2800nit Touch Screen Monitor (~$180) basically, high nits are a total life saver outdoors so u dont need a hood. gl!!
Would love to know this too
