I recently picked up an SL3 with the 24-70mm Vario-Elmarit and want to protect that front element without degrading the legendary image quality. I'm considering B+W or Breakthrough Photography filters, but I'm also curious about better hood options for the APO-Primes. What are you guys using to keep your SL glass safe while maintaining maximum contrast?
Curious about one thing: which specific APO-Primes are you running? Threads and hood designs vary quite a bit between the 35/50 and the longer glass.
TL;DR: Breakthrough Photography X4 UV Filter (best optics) vs Hoya HD3 UV Filter (toughest glass).
Breakthroughs X4 uses SCHOTT B270 glass for zero color cast, while Hoyas HD3 is chemically hardened—it's SO hard to scratch and pretty durable. Which focal lengths do you have??
I'd actually suggest a different approach—over the years, I've tried many 'protective' setups, and I've learned the hard way that not all filters are created equal. I once had a thin-rim filter shatter during a minor bump, and the tiny shards actually pitted the front element of my lens... it was honestly a total nightmare. Now, I'm super cautious about what I put in front of Leica glass.
Respectfully, I'd consider another option besides just the B+W or Breakthrough ones mentioned earlier. If you're shooting with the SL3 and those pricey APOs, you really want something with a heavy-duty brass frame so it doesn't seize or cross-thread on the lens. In my experience, the Leica E82 UVa II Filter is the safest bet for your 24-70mm because the glass is specifically matched to their proprietary coatings.
Also, I kinda disagree with staying with the stock hoods. The plastic ones are okay, but they can snap or pop off too easily in a crowded bag. I prefer these for safety:
* Heliopan 82mm Protection Filter SH-PMC - These have incredibly sturdy brass rings and high-end German glass.
* Haoge LH-SL82 Metal Lens Hood - It's much tougher for impact protection than the OEM plastic ones.
I mean, it's all about peace of mind when you're lugging around that kind of investment. I've seen too many cracked hoods to trust the stock ones for long-term safety... lol. Anyway, good luck with the new setup! Cheers.
Helpful thread 👍
- In my experience, B+W 82mm Master Clear MRC Nano 007 Filter is basically invisible.
- Honestly, stick with the stock hoods... theyre designed for maximum contrast. No need to change!!
Quick question before I dive in—are you mostly shooting in controlled environments or are you out in the elements like salt spray or sand? That makes a massive difference in whether you actually need a sacrificial filter or just a solid DIY maintenance routine. Anyway, if you are dropping SL3 money, I am a big believer in staying within the ecosystem or going for specific technical specs that match Leica glass. Here are a few things I swear by for a self-service approach:
