Hey everyone! I’m currently planning a three-week trip through Japan this fall and I’m really trying to dial in my gear list. I’m shooting with a Panasonic Lumix G9II and, while I absolutely love the sharpness of my primes, I really want to avoid the hassle of swapping lenses constantly while navigating crowded city streets or hiking in the mountains. I’m looking for that one "do-it-all" zoom lens that can handle everything from wide-angle architecture to a bit of distant street portraits.

I’ve been leaning toward the Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS PRO because the range and stabilization seem legendary, but I’m a bit worried about the bulk and weight for an MFT setup. On the other hand, the Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 is significantly lighter and faster at the wide end, but I’m worried I’ll miss that extra reach when I’m trying to capture details on temples. Weather sealing is a huge priority for me as well, since I’m expecting some rainy days.

For those of you who travel strictly with Micro Four Thirds, what has been your go-to versatile zoom? If you had to pick just one lens that perfectly balances image quality, focal range, and portability for a long trip, which one would you recommend and why?

In my experience, choosing a travel zoom is basically a trade-off between reach and ur physical comfort... especially during a 3-week trek through Japan. Over the years, I've learned that if a kit is too heavy, u end up leaving it in the hotel room by day 10 haha.

1. **System Synergy:** Since ur using the Panasonic Lumix G9II, sticking with Panasonic glass is huge. You get that sweet Dual I.S. 2 that works way better than mix-matching with Olympus glass.
2. **The "Goldilocks" Lens:** Honestly, the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. is the winner here. It's super sharp, weather-sealed, and much lighter than the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4.0 IS PRO brick.
3. **Low Light:** That f/2.8 at the wide end is actually highkey important for indoor temple shots where tripods aren't allowed!!

I'd go with the 12-60mm and just crop a bit if u need to. It's the perfect balance for MFT travel photography tho. Cheers!

In my experience, I once did a long trip with a heavy pro lens and honestly my neck was basically shot by day five.

1. Try the OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-200mm f/3.5-6.3.

It's weather-sealed and hits every focal length you'd need. The slower aperture is a trade-off, but G9II IBIS helps. Lesson learned? Weight is everything for 20k-step Japan days!

Warning: dont overspend on heavy "pro" glass just for a vacation. Tbh, carrying a bulky setup through Japan is a recipe for back pain. Id honestly suggest a used mid-range zoom from the same manufacturer. It gives u that essential weather sealing for way less money. Basically, prioritize ur comfort and save the cash for actual experiences... your wallet and neck will thank u later lol.
