leaving for my Japan trip next week and still havent picked gear. Stuck between the Peak Design 6L sling and the Bellroy 6L for my Lumix setup.
Also need a tripod. Im torn between the MeFOTO Backpacker and the PD Travel but PD is so pricey. Which combo is actually better for tons of walking?
> Stuck between the Peak Design 6L sling and the Bellroy 6L for my Lumix setup. I have spent way too much money testing slings for travel over the years. Honestly, the Bellroy Venture Sling 6L is way better for Japan than the PD one. Its more flexible and doesnt feel like a stiff box against your hip when youre walking 20k steps a day through Shinjuku. The Peak Design Everyday Sling 6L v2 is solid but the padding is way too rigid for a compact M4/3 body. Regarding the tripod, dont waste money on the Peak Design Travel Tripod Aluminum for a small setup. I've tried many, and the MeFOTO Backpacker Air Travel Tripod is much better for lots of walking. It is way lighter and fits inside most daypacks easily. You wont even notice it back there. Go light or you are gonna regret it by day three... trust me on that.
how many lenses are you actually packing? honestly i found the pd sling really stiff and a bit of a disappointment for long walks. unfortunately it just isnt as ergonomic as youd expect. try the Manfrotto Street Camera Sling Bag instead. i had issues with cheap tripods failing, so check the Sirui T-005SK Aluminum Travel Tripod with B-00K Ball Head. its way cheaper than the pd but still reliable.
Regarding what #1 said about the PD sling, i definitely agree that flexibility matters most when you are hitting 20k steps a day. I learned that the hard way in Kyoto when I brought a cheap kit and the leg locks basically gave up on me after two days. You might want to consider that these ultra-light options often trade off torsional rigidity for portability. Make sure to prioritize something with better vibration dampening and a higher static load capacity than you think you need for a Lumix setup. I would suggest looking at more specialized brands for the tripod. Honestly, just get any Gitzo Carbon Fiber Tripod and you will be set for life. They are built like tanks. As for the bag, maybe look at a Think Tank Photo Shoulder Bag. They might not be as stylish as Bellroy, but the technical padding is way more reliable for travel... especially on crowded subways where things get bumped.
