I recently picked up my first Micro Four Thirds camera, and I’m absolutely loving the compact form factor and portability! However, I’m realized that my kit feels a bit incomplete for longer day trips. Since MFT sensors can be power-hungry with their EVFs, I’m already looking at spare batteries, but I’m torn on what else is actually 'essential' versus just extra weight. I’m trying to keep things lightweight to match the system's philosophy. Would you prioritize a specific type of fast SD card, a high-quality strap, or maybe a small prime lens? If you could only pick three must-have accessories to start a new MFT kit, what would they be?
Ok so, welcome to MFT! Since ur already getting batteries, here are my top 3. First, a tiny prime like the Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH.—after years of shooting MFT, it’s still my fav. Second, a Peak Design Leash Camera Strap is basically essential for comfort. Lastly, maybe a fast card like the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I Card? Tbh it just works for me. Cheers!
Seconding the recommendations above. To keep things light, here are my technical picks: 1. SD Cards: SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO UHS-I V30 SDXC is reliable value, while Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB UHS-II V60 SDXC offers faster buffer clearing if ur body supports it.
2. Handling: A JJC Metal Thumb Up Grip helps stability without adding bulk.
3. Lens: Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 45mm f/1.8 (sharp/tiny) vs Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH. (wider/more affordable).
^ This. Also, I am literally in the exact same boat right now! I just picked up a new body and I am totally obsessed with the specs but man... the struggle to find that perfect balance is real. I spent like three hours last night comparing write speeds and power draw between different brands because I am terrified of running out of juice mid-shoot! I remember this one time I was hiking through a damp forest with my old full frame setup and everything just felt so bulky and heavy. I love the MFT philosophy so much but I keep overthinking the technical trade-offs between the Olympus weather sealing versus the Panasonic video performance. I think the power management varies wildly between them too. Someone told me that certain brands have way more efficient EVFs but IIRC that might just be for the older models? It is so hard to decide what to actually carry when you want to keep things light. TL;DR: Totally feel your pain! I am stuck in a massive research loop trying to balance battery life vs weight without losing the compact MFT vibe.

^ This. Also, if you're really looking at reliability for those long day trips, you gotta think about your data and power management. In my experience over the years, the cheaper fast cards can sometimes flake out under heavy burst shooting or in weird weather. I've tried many setups and here's how I'd break down the storage options:
