I have been shooting with my Lumix GX9 for about a year now, and while I love the portability of the Micro Four Thirds system, I am starting to feel limited by my basic kit zoom. I really want to dive deeper into street photography and find that perfect prime lens that balances size with high image quality. I love how discrete M4/3 setups can be, so keeping the profile small is a huge priority for me when I am out on the sidewalk.

I have been looking at a few specific options like the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 because of its tiny pancake design, but I am worried the autofocus might be too slow for moving subjects. On the other hand, the Olympus 17mm f1.8 seems like a solid choice for that classic 35mm equivalent field of view, which is what I usually gravitate toward. I am also considering whether I should go slightly wider with something like the Leica 15mm f1.7 or if a 25mm would feel too tight for busy city environments.

My budget is around $500, and I am mainly looking for something with a fast aperture for evening shots and snappy focus to catch candid moments. For those of you who have been shooting street for a while, which prime lens do you find yourself reaching for the most, and why does it work for your style?

Respectfully, I'd consider another option. > I have been looking at a few specific options like the Panasonic 20mm f1.7 because of its tiny pancake design, but I am worried the autofocus might be too slow for moving subjects. Honestly, ur totally right to worry about that. I used the Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH. for a while and it was unfortunately not as good as expected for street stuff. The focus is literally so slow that it hunts even in decent light... it basically missed all my candid shots and was super frustrating. I'd suggest looking at the Panasonic Lumix G 14mm f/2.5 II ASPH. instead. It's way more discrete and u can find it for like $170 used, which saves u a ton of money. Plus, the AF is actually snappy and wont let u down when things are moving. If u want a fast aperture for night shots, the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Micro Four Thirds is a total beast and costs around $289 new. I know the 15mm and 17mm were brought up already, but the 14mm is highkey a hidden gem for a GX9 setup i think? Anyway gl!

yo, I totally feel u on that kit lens struggle. I have been shooting street with my Panasonic Lumix GX9 for a while now and honestly, switching to primes basically changed everything for me. Since ur on a budget of $500, u actually have some REALLY good options that wont break the bank. So basically, ur right about the Panasonic Lumix G 20mm f/1.7 II ASPH.. I love how tiny it is, lowkey makes the camera pocketable, but the autofocus is... well, it hunts. For candid street shots where people are moving, it might drive u crazy. In my experience, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 is probably the best bang for ur buck. You can usually find it for around $300 to $350, and it is super snappy. Plus, that 35mm equivalent field of view is just classic, it is what most pros stick with. But if u can find a deal, the Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 15mm f/1.7 ASPH. is highkey the goat for street. It is crazy sharp and the build quality feels premium. I managed to snag a used one for about $375 and it basically never leaves my camera now. If u really wanna save money, there is always the Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH. which is like $150, but i guess it feels a bit tight when ur in a crowded city. I would say go for the 17mm or look for a used 15mm... they are both great lenses to shoot with. gl!

> I am also considering whether I should go slightly wider Curious about one thing: do u shoot in rainy weather? A used Sigma 16mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Micro Four Thirds is $300 and weather-sealed, but it's pretty bulky... thoughts?
