I just picked up a Lumix GX85 for a trip to Chicago next month and I am so hyped to get into street photography! I have been looking at what gear I actually need to carry and I keep seeing people recommend those peak design wrist straps and thumb grips for the hot shoe. But I read some reviews saying thumb grips can actually get in the way of the dials on smaller bodies and now I am second guessing myself.

My main things are:

  • budget around $150 total for extras
  • has to be super light for walking all day
  • needs to stay low profile so people dont notice me as much

What are the absolute must-haves for a setup like this? Should I stick with a neck strap or is that just gonna scream tourist while I am out there?...

Building on the earlier suggestion, I would skip the thumb grip if you're worried about the dials. It gets crowded fast. Focus on reliability instead:

Honestly, youre gonna love the GX85 for street. I have been using one for a year now and it just works well without attracting any attention. For the strap thing, definitely skip the neck strap because it screams tourist and bounces around way too much when youre walking. I went with the Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap Black and I am very satisfied with how it feels. It lets the camera hang naturally by your side and you can just pull it up for a shot in a second. Batteries are the most important thing tho. The GX85 is a power hog so dont even think about going out for a whole day with just one battery. I picked up the Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack and Charger for DMW-BLG10 and they have been reliable for months with no complaints. That leaves you plenty of room in your budget for a fast card like the SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I 200MB/s so you dont miss shots while the buffer clears. Regarding the thumb grip, I tried a generic one and it did kind of block the rear dial for me. Since youre on a budget and want to stay light, I would just skip it for now and see how the camera feels in your hand. You're better off spending that money on a small pouch like the Tenba Skyline 8 Shoulder Bag Black to keep it tucked away when youre not shooting. This setup is super low profile and keeps you way under that 150 dollar limit.
