Hey everyone! I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a Panasonic Lumix GH5. Even though it's been out for a while, I’m still blown away by the build quality and those video specs. I’m moving up from a much smaller point-and-shoot setup, and while the camera itself is a beast, I’m realizing that I need a proper ecosystem of accessories to really unlock its potential for the freelance videography work I’m starting to take on.
I’ve been doing some research, but the sheer amount of options is a bit overwhelming. Right now, my main focus is on hybrid shooting—mostly YouTube content and some local event coverage. I’ve already noticed that the battery life, while decent, isn't going to get me through a full day of shooting 4K video. Should I stick with the official Panasonic DMW-BLF19 batteries, or are there specific third-party brands that you guys trust not to throw errors or die unexpectedly?
Another thing I’m struggling with is storage. I really want to take advantage of the 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording, but my current SD cards are definitely not fast enough for those high bitrates. Do I absolutely need to shell out for V90 cards, or can I get away with V60s for the 400Mbps modes? Also, I’m considering a cage—specifically something from SmallRig or Tilta—to help with mounting a top handle and an external monitor, but I’m worried about adding too much bulk for handheld shooting.
I’m trying to be smart with my budget and prioritize the "essentials" before buying the fun stuff. If you were building a GH5 kit from scratch today with about $600-$800 to spend on accessories, what would be at the top of your list? What are the must-have items that made the biggest difference in your workflow or image quality?
yo congrats on the gh5!! honestly it’s such a tank and still lowkey one of the best hybrid values out there for freelance work... basically i’ve been using one for years and here is how i would spend that $800 to get you up and running without breaking the bank: * **Batteries:** Panasonic originals are great but pricey so i’d go with the Wasabi Power DMW-BLF19 Battery 2-Pack with USB Dual Charger for about $35... they’ve never failed me and you get two plus a charger for way less than one OEM cell!
* **Storage:** For the 400Mbps 10-bit modes, V60 is hit or miss tbh... it might work for a bit then throw a write error and ruin your take. just play it safe and grab the Kingston Canvas React Plus 128GB SDXC UHS-II V90. It’s basically the best value V90 card on the market for around $100 and it usually includes a fast reader.
* **Rigging:** Don’t overthink it, just get the SmallRig Camera Cage for Panasonic Lumix GH5/GH5S 2049 for like $60. It’s super slim and lets you mount a handle later without adding massive bulk to the setup.
* **Audio:** You NEED good sound for youtube so grab a Rode VideoMic GO II for about $99... it’s tiny and sounds fantastic without needing its own battery. but yeah basically you can get all of this for under $300 and save the rest of your cash for a fast prime lens or a decent variable ND filter cuz you're definitely gonna need one for outdoor event shoots... anyway hope that helps and good luck with the new gear!! cheers
> Do I absolutely need to shell out for V90 cards, or can I get away with V60s for the 400Mbps modes? saw this earlier but just getting back to ya now! honestly, you can technically get away with V60s since 400Mbps is only 50MB/s, but i've had V60s struggle when the card gets full or hot. i'd highkey recommend grabbing at least one ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II Video Speed Class 90 (V90) 128GB for those critical shoots to avoid dropped frames. also, if you're skipping the official batteries to save cash, the Watson DMW-BLF19 Lithium-Ion Battery Pack is way more reliable than the super cheap stuff and wont give you those weird "not for use" messages. basically, just prioritize a fast card first and youll be golden! gl with the freelance work 👍
