Hey everyone! I’m currently planning a two-week trip to Japan and I’m really trying to streamline my Micro Four Thirds setup. On my last few trips, I found myself constantly fumbling with lens changes in the middle of crowded streets, and I missed quite a few shots because of it. I’ve decided I want to find that one 'holy grail' travel zoom that can stay on my camera for 90% of the time.

I’ve been doing some research and I’m torn between a few options. The Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro seems like the ultimate choice for range, but I’m a little worried about the weight and bulk for all-day hiking. On the other hand, the Panasonic Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4 is lighter and faster at the wide end, but I’m not sure if I’ll regret losing that extra reach. Weather sealing is a huge plus for me since I’ll be outdoors regardless of the forecast, and I'd love to stay under a $1,000 budget if possible, though I'm willing to look at used gear.

For those of you who travel light with M4/3, what has been your go-to workhorse? If you had to pick just one zoom lens to take on a trip where you didn't want to carry a gear bag, which one would it be?

> The Olympus 12-100mm f/4 IS Pro seems like the ultimate choice Quick question—what body are you using? tbh the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4.0 IS PRO is heavy, so I'd be careful about mount stress and balance on smaller cameras during travel...

Coming back to this... I totally feel u on the lens fumbling. I actually did a solo trek through some rainy coastal trails once with a massive setup and honestly? It was a total disaster. I was so worried about dropping my gear while swapping lenses in the wind that I ended up missing some of the best shots. Never again! So basically the consensus is that if u want the ultimate reach, the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-100mm f/4.0 IS PRO mentioned earlier is the beast, but like others said, it’s really heavy and might stress ur camera mount if ur not careful. The Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. is the lighter, faster alternative for those dim temples. But if ur really looking for a budget-friendly and "safe" middle ground for all-day hiking, I’d suggest looking at the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 12-45mm f/4.0 PRO. It’s weather-sealed, incredibly tiny, and sharp as a tack. NGL, u lose some reach compared to the big zooms, but it won't break ur back or ur budget. You can usually find it used for a steal. Another solid workhorse for Japan—especially for the range—is the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 14-140mm f/3.5-5.6 II ASPH. POWER O.I.S.. Just make sure it’s the 'II' version for that weather sealing!! It’s way cheaper than the Pro glass, often under $500 used, and literally covers everything. Just be careful in low light since it’s a bit slower. Honestly, for travel, weight is everything. If ur setup is too bulky, u'll end up leaving it in the hotel room... and that's the real risk haha. gl!

So I'm still kinda new to this but i actually went with the Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 ASPH. POWER O.I.S. for my last trip and honestly? it was perfect. basically the f/2.8 at the wide end is sooo helpful for dim temples and it's way lighter for all-day walking than the oly pro... i guess i didnt really miss the extra reach much?? im super satisfied with it. good luck!!
