Tbh, if you have a bit more budget, I'd definitely look at the Deity V-Mic D3 Pro or maybe the Rode VideoMic Pro+.
The Deity is cool because it has that stepless gain knob on the back, which is super helpful for dialing in audio levels on the fly without messing with the G85's internal menus. It's a bit long though, so maybe watch out if you use super wide lenses.
The Rode VideoMic Pro+ is basically the gold standard IMO. It has an auto-power feature so it turns off when you turn the camera off... honestly a lifesaver because I always forget to flip the switch lol. Both are way more 'pro' than the tiny mics mentioned earlier, but they do add some bulk to the setup. Depends on if you prefer being compact or having better control!
> Re: "Tbh, if you have a bit more budget, I'd definitely look at the Deity V-Mic D3 Pro or maybe the Rode VideoMic Pro+." Saw this earlier but just now getting a chance to reply. I would suggest being a bit more cautious before going for those larger, battery-dependent mics. The Deity is nice, but relying on an internal lithium battery can be a liability if you are out in the field and it runs dry... that's a risk i usually try to avoid. For a more reliable workflow, you might want to consider the Rode VideoMic NTG Hybrid Shotgun Microphone. Its standout feature is the safety channel, which records a second track at a lower volume. This is absolutely essential for protecting your audio from clipping if noises get loud unexpectedly. It is much safer for high-stakes recordings. If you prefer something truly fail-safe, the Sennheiser+MKE+200+Directional+On-Camera+Microphone&linkCode=osi&tag=5422-20" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 200 Directional On-Camera Microphone is another solid option. It doesnt use batteries at all and the internal shock mount means there are fewer external parts to break or lose. Just make sure to verify your levels in the G85 menu before every take, as the internal preamp can be a bit finicky if you aren't careful with the gain settings.
