I recently made the jump to an OM System body and I’m absolutely loving the portability of the Micro Four Thirds system, but I feel like my gear bag is missing those 'quality of life' essentials. Since MFT is so specialized, I’m curious what you all consider mandatory. I've already grabbed a couple of extra batteries since mirrorless tends to eat through them, and I'm eyeing a small Peak Design wrist strap to keep things lightweight. Should I be looking into specific lens hoods, tiny travel tripods, or maybe even a thumb grip for better handling? What are the absolute must-have accessories that have genuinely improved your shooting experience? I’d love to hear your top recommendations!
In my experience, you’re gonna want to look at handling vs. stability first. I’m still a bit of a beginner, but I’ve tried two things that really changed my kit for the better and they didn't break the bank. First is a thumb grip like the Haoge THB-OM5 Metal Hot Shoe Thumb Up Rest.
Pros: It makes the small OM body feel so much more secure in one hand, literally stops me from dropping it.
Cons: It blocks the hot shoe, so you can't use a flash or a mic easily, which kinda sucks. Second is a tiny tripod like the Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod MTPIXI-B.
Pros: It’s super lightweight and fits basically anywhere in your bag. Great for those Live Composite shots!
Cons: It’s not very tall, so you’re always looking for a ledge or a trash can to put it on. Honestly, the thumb grip was the biggest QoL upgrade for me. It’s cheap (like $20-ish) and makes the camera feel less like a toy. But if you’re into night shots, the PIXI is a total must-have for MFT. Good luck!!
Quick question - what lenses are you rocking?? Before I give advice, I gotta know if you need weather sealing cuz it's a total game changer! Honestly, so hyped you joined MFT, but definately be cautious with cheap accessories! 1. Get SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-II cards. Reliability is HUGE and these are sooo fast.
2. Try the Peak Design Cuff Camera Wrist Strap for extra safety. Technicaly, glass matters most tho!
