So I finally jumped into the m43 world with a used Olympus E-M10 IV and im loving the size but now I'm staring at my empty gear bag like... what else do I actually need. I've been googling a bunch and keep seeing people swear by the Godox TT350o flash and those Peak Design Leash straps. I get the strap thing but $60 for a piece of nylon seems steep right? And for the flash... is it even worth the weight if I'm mostly doing street photography? I'm heading to Kyoto for two weeks next month and really want to keep things light but functional.

Here is what I'm looking for:

  • Budget: Trying to stay under $300 total for everything
  • Use case: Street stuff, some temple shots, maybe some macro if possible
  • Portability: If it doesnt fit in a small sling bag it aint coming with me
  • Batteries: Do I really need like three? The battery life seems okay so far but people on reddit act like it dies in ten minutes

Are there any weird niche things I'm missing? Like specific filters or maybe those tiny thumb grips? I just dont want to get halfway across the world and realize I forgot something basic that everyone else uses. Is a grip actually necessary for the smaller bodies or is that just for people with giant hands? Let me know what you guys actually keep in your bag daily...

In my experience, everyone forgets card reliability until it is too late. Since you are heading to Kyoto, do not skimp there. I have used many brands over the years and always trust the SanDisk Extreme Pro 128GB SDXC UHS-I Card to keep photos safe. Also, grab a Hoya NXT Plus 37mm Circular Polarizer Filter. It is tiny and basically essential for cutting glare on temple ponds and making garden colors pop.

Unfortunately, that 1210mAh battery isn't as good as expected for a full day in Kyoto. I had issues with it dying before sunset, so definitely buy the Olympus BLS-50 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery. Skip the flash for street photography. Grab the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 30mm f/3.5 Macro Lens for your macro shots. The kit lens close-focusing is honestly disappointing and this prime is much sharper.
